HBO released the first teaser for Lanterns on March 4, 2026. The two-minute preview confirms the existence of a beloved, furry Green Lantern. Hal Jordan mentions a fellow Corps member who is a squirrel, confirming the character Ch’p is part of the DC Universe.
The show stars Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart. It is set to premiere in August 2026 on HBO and Max .
Hal Jordan mentions the squirrel Lantern Chp
The confirmation comes in the final moments of the teaser. John Stewart asks Hal Jordan if he talks to the other Lanterns. Jordan replies that he is the only human. He clarifies the others are aliens, adding, “One of them is a f*g squirrel” .
This line is a direct reference to Ch’p. In DC Comics lore, Ch’p is a Green Lantern from the planet H’lven. He is an intelligent, brave, and talking squirrel-like being. He first appeared in Green Lantern #148 in 1982 .
Will Chp physically appear in the series
As of March 5, 2026, there is no confirmation that Ch’p will physically appear on screen. The character is confirmed to exist within the show’s universe. The teaser only provides a verbal mention.
The tone of the Lanterns teaser is grounded and described as a “True Detective” style mystery . It focuses on Hal Jordan and John Stewart investigating a murder in the American heartland. Given this Earth-bound, gritty atmosphere, the appearance of a talking CGI squirrel may not fit the first season’s story.
However, showrunner Chris Mundy and director James Hawes have indicated there is “wit and comedy” in the series . The mention of Ch’p could set up a future appearance. Given James Gunn’s history with characters like Rocket Raccoon, introducing a creature like Ch’p in a later project remains a strong possibility.
