The author behind the iconic Jack Reacher character has revealed why the Amazon Prime Video series has become a global hit. Lee Child credits the show’s success to its long-form storytelling format, which finally captures the full depth of his novels in a way that feature films never could.
The Power of Long-Form Storytelling
Lee Child points to the extended runtime of a television season as the key ingredient for faithfully adapting his books. He believes the format allows the show to present a complete picture of Jack Reacher, something a two-hour movie could never achieve.
“In the books, that’s obvious, but of course for a short-format adaptation that gets compressed and misses a lot, but we had the time to show it all and that was one of the things that I was most excited about and also makes it all the more effective,” Child explained.
He described his book version of Reacher as a “fully rounded” character with “light and shade and loud and quiet.” The series uses its eight-episode seasons to explore these different facets, including the character’s quiet moments and emotional depth, rather than focusing only on action.
Why the Show’s Pacing Makes Action More Impactful
According to Child, the deliberate pacing of the Reacher series makes its action sequences more powerful. The show allows quieter sections to breathe, creating a effective contrast that makes the loud action moments hit harder.
“My theory is that if you have relentless non-stop pace that’s the same thing as having no pace at all. What you need is to show the differences, the quiet parts make the action parts even more effective. And so that was the thrill and the fun of doing a whole season on one story,” Child said.
He referred to the running time available in streaming television as a “luxury” compared to the “ruthless cutting” required in films. This freedom lets the series keep “all the little bits, the quiet bits, the fun bits, and the tender bits” from his novels.
A Faithful Adaptation That Pleased Book Fans
The Prime Video series has built a reputation for its close adherence to the source material. Each season adapts a single Lee Child novel, giving the story room to develop naturally. The first season was based on Killing Floor, Child’s 1997 debut novel, with subsequent seasons pulling from Bad Luck and Trouble and Persuader. The upcoming fourth season will adapt Gone Tomorrow.
Casting also played a crucial role in the show’s success. Alan Ritchson won praise from Child and fans for his physical resemblance to the book character and his understanding of the role.
“Alan was the one, he was the guy. There was no question about that as he owned the role,” Child stated.
This attention to authenticity created a strong connection with longtime readers of the book series.

Record-Breaking Popularity and Viewer Response
The effectiveness of this approach is reflected in the show’s impressive performance. Reacher Season 3 became the most-watched returning season of television ever on Prime Video, drawing 54.6 million global viewers in its first 19 days. According to Nielsen, the show dominated streaming charts in March 2025 with 6.6 billion minutes viewed, making it the most-watched show across all platforms that month.
The series has also proven to be a major financial success for Amazon. A study found that Reacher has generated $279 million in subscriber revenue for Prime Video since its 2022 debut, establishing it as a cornerstone of the platform’s programming.
The show’s appeal extends beyond the U.S., with 56% of its audience located internationally. It has performed particularly well in the United Kingdom, Germany, and Brazil.
Lee Child is confident that streaming television is the ideal medium for novel adaptations. He believes that if the format had been available earlier, most authors would have chosen it over film.
“I can guarantee that if streaming television had been around before, no novelist would ever have chosen anything else, because this works so much better,” Child said.
With a fourth season in production and a spin-off series focusing on Frances Neagley also in development, the world of Jack Reacher continues to expand on Prime Video.
