YG Entertainment’s stock prices have been unstable due to ongoing rumors about BLACKPINK’s contract renewal. Every time dating rumors about member Lisa surface, the company’s shares take a hit. Investors are growing anxious as YG has not confirmed any official updates about the group’s future.
BLACKPINK’s exclusive contract with YG Entertainment ended in August 2023. Since then, uncertainty about their renewal has caused fluctuations in YG’s stock value. The biggest concern revolves around Lisa, as reports claim she may not renew her contract.
On September 15, 2023, Thai media reported that Lisa was seen with Frederic Arnault, CEO of TAG Heuer and son of LVMH’s chairman. Around the same time, rumors spread that Lisa rejected a 50 billion KRW ($38 million) offer from YG. The company’s stock dropped nearly 3% that day and fell over 10% at one point.
Earlier in July, dating rumors between Lisa and Arnault also led to a 9.13% drop in YG’s stock price. Reports suggested that Lisa’s contract renewal was uncertain, while other members were still in discussions. This instability has frustrated shareholders, especially after HYBE confirmed BTS’s contract renewal in advance.
“HYBE is a feast, while YG is a famine,” one investor commented in YG’s stock forum. Others expressed frustration, with some selling their shares due to anxiety. However, some remain hopeful, believing Lisa will eventually renew.
Analysts suggest that YG should not rely solely on BLACKPINK. Lee Hwajung from KB Securities said, “YG’s stock price has already reflected the uncertainty. Instead of focusing only on BLACKPINK, investors should look at other groups like TREASURE and BABYMONSTER.”
TREASURE has shown strong sales, with their latest album selling over 1.7 million copies. BABYMONSTER, YG’s new girl group, has also gained attention with a large pre-debut fanbase. Kwon Choijong from Hana Financial Investment added that these groups could help stabilize YG’s profits even if BLACKPINK takes a break.
Despite the concerns, BLACKPINK remains one of YG’s most successful acts. Their recent world tour attracted 2.11 million fans across 34 cities. They also made history as the first K-pop girl group to headline Coachella and the UK’s BST Hyde Park festival.
YG has not officially confirmed BLACKPINK’s contract status. Until then, stock prices may continue to react to rumors. Investors and fans are waiting for clarity, hoping for good news soon.
