The ABC drama Lost first aired in 2004, but its story begins thousands of years before Oceanic Flight 815 ever crashed. The show’s complex timeline, filled with flashbacks, flash-forwards, and time travel, became a signature element. For anyone who ever wondered about the order of events, here is the entire history of the island and its inhabitants, broken down into simple chapters.

The Ancient History of the Island

Long before any plane crash, the island was protected by a mysterious energy source. The story of the island’s ancient guardians begins with an unnamed woman who became the protector of the Heart of the Island, a glowing cave of light and immense electromagnetic energy.

Around the year 4 AD, a pregnant Roman woman named Claudia was shipwrecked on the island. The protector helped her give birth to twin boys, Jacob and the Man in Black, but then killed Claudia and raised the boys as her own. The brothers grew up with opposing views; Jacob believed in the goodness of people, while the Man in Black saw them as flawed and corrupt. After their adoptive mother was killed by the Man in Black, Jacob threw his brother into the Heart of the Island. This transformed the Man in Black into the Smoke Monster, a dark entity that could take human form but was trapped on the island. Jacob, now immortal, became the new protector.

Key Arrivals and the Rise of the Others

For centuries, Jacob brought people to the island to prove his brother wrong about humanity, setting the stage for future conflicts.

In 1867, a British slave ship called the Black Rock crashed on the island during a storm. Among the survivors was a man named Ricardo, later known as Richard Alpert. The Man in Black tried to manipulate Richard into killing Jacob, but Jacob instead won Richard’s loyalty. He granted Richard immortality and appointed him as an intermediary, leading the group that would become known as the Others.

In 1954, the U.S. Army arrived on the island to conduct nuclear tests, bringing a hydrogen bomb nicknamed Jughead. Richard Alpert and the Others killed the soldiers and took control of the undetonated bomb.

The Dharma Initiative Era

The Dharma Initiative, a scientific research project, arrived on the island in the early 1970s. Their goal was to study the island’s unique properties and change the factors of the Valenzetti Equationโ€”the source of the cursed numbers 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42โ€”to save humanity from extinction. They built several research stations, including the Swan, which would later become the infamous Hatch.

An uneasy truce was formed with the Others in 1973. However, in 1977, a major event known as “the Incident” occurred at the Swan station construction site. Excessive drilling caused a massive release of electromagnetism. To contain this energy, the Dharma Initiative built a system requiring a button to be pushed every 108 minutes.

In November 1987, a French research vessel shipwrecked on the island. One of the scientists, Danielle Rousseau, was pregnant. Her crew became “sick” due to the Man in Black’s influence, and she was forced to kill them. She gave birth to a daughter, Alex, who was later taken from her by Ben Linus, a member of the Others. Rousseau would live alone on the island for 16 years, repeatedly broadcasting a distress signal.

The conflict between the Dharma Initiative and the Others culminated in 1992 with an event called “the Purge.” Under the leadership of Ben Linus, the Others released a poisonous gas, killing almost every member of the Dharma Initiative and effectively ending their presence on the island.

The Crash of Oceanic 815 and the Oceanic Six

On September 22, 2004, Oceanic Flight 815 crashed on the island, tearing apart the lives of its survivors. Over the next 44 days, the survivors, led by Dr. Jack Shephard, encountered the Others, the Smoke Monster, and the mysteries of the Dharma stations.

On December 21, 2004, a freighter arrived near the island, leading to a plan for some survivors to escape. To protect the island from a man named Charles Widmore, Jack promised John Locke that they would lie about what happened. On January 5, 2005, six survivorsโ€”Jack, Kate, Hurley, Sun, Sayid, and Aaronโ€”were rescued and became known to the world as the Oceanic Six. To achieve this rescue, Ben Linus had turned a frozen wheel beneath the island, causing the island to vanish and sending its remaining inhabitants jumping uncontrollably through time.

The Time Travel Period

After Ben moved the island, he was transported to the Sahara Desert in October 2005. Meanwhile, those left on the island, including Sawyer, Juliet, and Locke, began erratically jumping through different time periods.

These time shifts sent them to various points in the island’s history, including 1954 and 1974. Eventually, John Locke managed to stop the jumps by turning the frozen wheel himself, which sent him to Tunisia in 2007. The other survivors, however, were stranded in 1974, where they joined the Dharma Initiative and lived for three years until events caught up with them.

The Return to the Island

In 2007, after John Locke’s death, the Oceanic Six were convinced to return to the island. They boarded Ajira Flight 316, which also crashed. Some passengers, including Jack, Kate, and Hurley, were sent back in time to 1977, where they reunited with Sawyer and Jin. They became involved in the original Dharma Initiative and attempted to change history by detonating the Jughead hydrogen bomb.

The detonation did not change the past but instead sent them all forward to the present day of 2007. The final season culminated in a battle for the fate of the island between Jack Shephard, who became the new protector, and the Man in Black. Jack sacrificed his life to defeat the Man in Black and save the island, and Hugo “Hurley” Reyes became the new, benevolent leader.

The series ended with a “flash-sideways” timeline, which was revealed to be a kind of afterlife or purgatory where the main characters found each other before moving on together.

The Legacy of the Lost Timeline

The complete Lost timeline spans from ancient mythology to a sci-fi present, connecting the lives of its characters across centuries. The show’s intricate plotting and deep lore have ensured its place as a landmark series in television history.
