Kerry arrived at the couple’s apartment one morning, where Edmond was preparing breakfast. Her first words to her future daughter-in-law set a warm and accepting tone for the visit.
“I’m doing better now that I’ve met my future… Oh my goodness… I’m blessed and highly favored, and you just keep on making the blessings grow… So fruitful,” Kerry told Kalybriah.
The conversation quickly turned deep as Kerry, seated with Kalybriah in the kitchen, asked a pointed but playful question to understand their connection. She wanted to know what made Kalybriah choose her son, asking, “What coconut fell off the tree and hit you in the head?” Kalybriah explained the unique nature of the pods, where she fell for Edmond’s vulnerability and inner character without the distraction of physical appearance.
“By day three, I’m just like, ‘Okay, when do I get to see this man? When do I get to see Edmond?’” Kalybriah shared. “Just falling for who he is, his story, his life, him being able to be vulnerable. A lot of men can’t be. He can be very vulnerable.”
Kerry acknowledged her son’s complex past, noting that he had “seen a lot” and had a habit of locking away his emotions. She expressed her happiness that he was finally ready to give someone the “key” to those emotional boxes.
A Cultural Gift and a Family Prayer
A significant moment in their meeting was when Kerry told Kalybriah about a special gift she had brought: a set of cultural beads. She explained that this was a tradition, as she gives these beads to all her daughters-in-law. The beads are made for her by a “bead girl” in Ghana, a place she and Edmond have visited. The emotional gesture moved Kalybriah to immediately get up and hug Kerry.
Before they enjoyed the breakfast Edmond had made, the three joined hands for a prayer. Kerry offered words of wisdom, telling the couple, “What’s gonna happen in life is gonna happen in life. Destiny is going to unfold, period. Therefore, don’t stress nothing in life.”
Private Approval and Underlying Concerns
When Kalybriah briefly left the room, Kerry had a private and emotional moment with her son. She told him directly that she liked Kalybriah and that she felt she was a good match for him.
“I look at the Instagram and I sent it to my sister,” Kerry recalled. “We both were like ‘nah.’”
Despite this initial hesitation, her in-person meeting with Kalybriah won her over. She told Edmond that Kalybriah “fits” with him, giving the relationship her full blessing.
A Rocky Road to the Meeting
The warm family meeting came after Edmond and Kalybriah faced significant challenges in the previous episodes. Their relationship was tested during their post-engagement trip to Mexico. Back in Denver, their struggles continued during a group outing at a rodeo bar. A comment from Edmond comparing their relationship to another couple’s sparked a new conflict. Kalybriah felt unappreciated and frustrated, telling him, “I need you to grow up and be an adult and talk to me about stuff,” highlighting their different approaches to handling conflict.
