What Is Lucky About

The series follows Lucky Armstrong (Anya Taylor-Joy), a young woman raised in a life of crime by her father. After leaving that world behind years ago, she gets pulled back in for one final job.

When a multi-million-dollar heist goes wrong, Lucky is forced to go on the run. She finds herself pursued by both the FBI and a dangerous crime boss. The story follows her desperate attempt to escape her past and secure her freedom.

The series is based on Marissa Stapley’s novel, which was a Reese’s Book Club pick in December 2021 and became an international bestseller.

Lucky Cast and Characters

Anya Taylor-Joy leads the cast as Lucky Armstrong, the con artist at the center of the story. She also serves as an executive producer on the series through her production banner LadyKiller.

The ensemble cast includes:

  • Annette Bening as Priscilla Matheson, a ruthless mob leader
  • Timothy Olyphant as John Armstrong, Lucky’s father who trained her in crime
  • Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor as Agent Billie Rand, the FBI agent leading the chase
  • Drew Starkey as Cary, Lucky’s husband
  • Clifton Collins Jr. as Dutch
  • William Fichtner as Whittaker
  • Mo McRae as Agent Eli Gates
  • Eric Lange as Kershaw

Behind the Scenes

Lucky comes from Apple Studios and Hello Sunshine, the production company founded by Reese Witherspoon. The series is created, co-showrun, written and executive produced by Jonathan Tropper (Your Friends & Neighbors, This Is Where I Leave You). Cassie Pappas (Griselda, Silo) serves as co-showrunner alongside Tropper.

Reese Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter executive produce for Hello Sunshine. Jonathan Van Tulleken (Shōgun) directed the pilot and serves as an executive producer.

Filming began in February 2025 in Las Vegas before moving to the main production location in Los Angeles. The production received a $10.683 million California tax credit.

Trailer and First Look

Apple TV released a teaser trailer for Lucky in February 2026. A full official trailer followed on June 3, 2026.

The trailer shows Taylor-Joy’s character on the run, with intense action sequences and dramatic confrontations. One scene features Bening’s character asking Lucky about her missing son and the missing money, warning that “That’s the wrong answer” when Lucky says she does not have it.

What Makes Lucky Different

The series offers a fresh take on the crime thriller genre. Taylor-Joy shared her perspective on the character, saying:

“I was so attracted to playing somebody who was just so desperate to stay still and put down roots and form some kind of attachment where she didn’t feel like the ground was going to fall away from underneath her”.

She added:

“I think there’s been such a glorification of the hustle and the con, where we see it as very slick and jazzy and sexy. I was intrigued by the idea of: What is this actually like if you can’t form any attachments to anybody? If you can’t even give people your real name, how does that feel?”

The series follows a non-linear narrative structure, with flashbacks showing Lucky’s childhood with her father and how she met Cary.
