Lucy Liu recently opened up about her decision not to let her 9-year-old son, Rockwell, watch the Charlie’s Angels films. During an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show on November 18, 2024, the actress shared that she doesn’t believe the iconic action-packed films are suitable for her young son, given the mature content involved.
“Too Much” for Her Son
Liu, who starred as one of the Angels in the 2000 Charlie’s Angels film and its 2003 sequel Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, expressed her concern about the films’ content being “too much” for her son.
When asked by Barrymore whether Rockwell had seen the films, Liu firmly responded, “No, no. It’s a little too much…” The moment turned playful when Barrymore chimed in, asking, “Boob?” Liu, laughing, confirmed, saying, “Exactly. I think you’ve got a lot of boob going on, you’ve got some booty going on. I think it’s too much.”
Despite the fun of their exchange, Liu emphasized that the films, which feature sensual scenes and suggestive costumes, are not the kind of content she’s ready for her son to watch at this stage.
The Iconic Dance Scene
The Charlie’s Angels films are known for their action sequences and glamorous, sometimes risqué, outfits. One of the most memorable scenes from Full Throttle features Liu, Drew Barrymore, and Cameron Diaz performing a seductive dance routine to the tune of the Pink Panther theme song, assisted by the Pussycat Dolls. Barrymore playfully reminded Liu of her “booty” during the dance, pointing out how tight the outfits were. Liu, however, agreed with her costar’s assessment of the scene’s suggestiveness, maintaining that it would not be suitable for her son to watch.
“No, he hasn’t seen it and I don’t think it’s the right time,” Liu reiterated. “It’s too much.”
While Barrymore acknowledged the tricky nature of showing such films to young children, especially given the boy-girl dynamics of a mother-son relationship, Liu seemed to agree that it might be a challenging film to share with a young child.
Though Liu may not be showing Rockwell Charlie’s Angels anytime soon, she has fond memories of the film franchise. During a previous appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, Liu revealed that she still keeps some mementos from her time filming the series, including a collection of nude photos that she and Barrymore had taken during a fun moment behind the scenes. Liu mentioned, “I have them. I do! Of course. And you look gorgeous, as you still do, and you’re so natural and so playful and having a great time.”
In the past, Liu had described the photos as part of a broader collection of playful portraits taken with her castmates. “I have a series of portraits of so many people with and without clothes on, guys!” she shared with the crowd, reflecting on the joyful and carefree moments of their time working together.
Despite the more lighthearted memories, Liu’s stance on not letting her son watch Charlie’s Angels reflects her concern about what she deems appropriate for his age at this point in time.
