The Malcolm in the Middle revival is finally here, and while fans are excited to see the Wilkerson family back together, one major change has everyone talking. Caleb Ellsworth-Clark steps into the role of Dewey, originally played by Erik Per Sullivan. The new actor recently opened up about the pressure of replacing such a beloved character and how the original cast helped him feel at home. The four-episode revival, titled Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, premiered on April 10, 2026, on Hulu in the United States and Disney+ internationally.

Caleb Ellsworth-Clark Felt Really Nervous Joining the Cast

Taking over a fan-favorite role is no small task, and Caleb Ellsworth-Clark knew it. He admitted he was “really, really nervous” when he first showed up on set. The Canadian actor grew up watching the original series and had a deep connection to the character.

“I grew up watching the show. I know that Dewey was a fan favorite, but he was also a personal favorite. And I think I was aware that maybe people might be disappointed Erik wasn’t gonna come back and do the show. I guess I didn’t want to f–k that up.”

To get ready for the part, Ellsworth-Clark re-watched several episodes of the old series. He wanted to honor what came before while making the character his own.

The Original Cast Made Him Feel Welcome

Even though he was scared, Ellsworth-Clark said the original cast members treated him with nothing but kindness. He praised Bryan Cranston (Hal), Frankie Muniz (Malcolm), and Jane Kaczmarek (Lois) for being very warm and welcoming.

“They were so warm and welcoming. I was really scared to show up but they all took such great care of me and made me feel like I belong. So I am really grateful to all of them.”

The actor explained that the support from the main cast helped him get past his fears quickly. He felt like he belonged to the television family from day one.

Why Erik Per Sullivan Did Not Return as Dewey

The original Dewey, Erik Per Sullivan, chose not to come back for the revival. Sullivan stopped acting over a decade ago and has focused on his education. Reports confirm he is now a graduate student at Harvard University, studying Victorian literature.

Jane Kaczmarek shared that the producers offered Sullivan a large amount of money to return, but he politely said no.

“They offered him buckets of money to come back, and he just said, ‘No thank you.’”

Bryan Cranston previously mentioned that Sullivan is in his mid-30s and has built a completely different life away from Hollywood. His decision was respected by the whole team.

Who Is Caleb Ellsworth-Clark

Caleb Ellsworth-Clark is not a newcomer to acting. He comes from Calgary, Canada, and has worked steadily in film and television for over ten years. His past work includes roles in Nightmare Alley (2021) and The Silencing (2020), as well as appearances in popular TV shows like Fargo and Wynonna Earp. He has also performed in theater productions in Calgary and Edmonton.

What to Expect From Dewey in the Revival

In Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, Dewey has grown up and becomes a traveling musician. The revival shows him connecting with the family mostly through Zoom calls rather than in-person scenes. This format allowed the show to include the character while respecting the change in actors.

The story picks up years after the original ended. Malcolm now has a teenage daughter named Leah (Keeley Karsten) and a girlfriend named Tristan (Kiana Madeira). Hal and Lois demand that the whole family come together for their 40th anniversary party, which brings everyone back into each other’s lives.

Other Cast Members Returning

Most of the original cast returned for the revival. Frankie Muniz is back as Malcolm, Bryan Cranston plays Hal, and Jane Kaczmarek returns as Lois. Older brothers Francis (Christopher Kennedy Masterson) and Reese (Justin Berfield) also make their return. The revival introduces new family members as well, including Kelly (Vaughan Murrae), the youngest Wilkerson sibling.

Where to Watch the Revival

Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair is now streaming. Viewers in the United States can watch all four episodes on Hulu. For global audiences, including the UK, Canada, Australia, and India, the revival is available on Disney+. Indian viewers can also find the series on JioHotstar.
