The new Malcolm in the Middle revival, titled Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, started streaming on April 10, 2026, on Hulu and Disney+. Most of the original family members returned for the four-episode event. But one major face was missing.
Erik Per Sullivan, who played the sweet and musically gifted brother Dewey on the original show, chose not to come back. He left acting years ago and is now studying at Harvard University.
The show’s producers really wanted him back. So they wrote the entire Dewey storyline in a very specific way. They made Dewey appear mostly through laptop video calls. Their hope was that Sullivan would agree to film his scenes remotely without ever needing to visit the set.
The Clever Plan to Bring Back Dewey
Executive producers Tracy Katsky and Linwood Boomer recently shared the full story. They explained that they kept trying to convince Sullivan to return until the very last day of production.
“The reason that so much of Dewey is on a laptop is because we were trying up until the very last day to convince Erik to do it. We knew that if he was just on a laptop, we could film the whole thing remotely. We were like, ‘You don’t even have to come to a set. You don’t even have to come and hang out. We can make this so easy for you.’” – Tracy Katsky, Executive Producer
The team thought this plan was foolproof. Sullivan would not need to travel. He would not need to take time away from his studies. All he had to do was record a few video scenes from wherever he was.
But Sullivan still said no.
A Simple But Strong Refusal
Linwood Boomer, who created the original Malcolm in the Middle series, has known Sullivan for years. He tried to personally convince the actor to change his mind.
Sullivan turned the question around on Boomer. He asked Boomer if he wanted to go back to acting himself. Boomer said no. Then Sullivan gave a very direct reply.
“Do you want to go back to being an actor? I was like, ‘No.’ He said, ‘Okay, well, stop bugging me about it.’” – Linwood Boomer, Creator and Executive Producer
Jane Kaczmarek, who plays Lois on the show, also confirmed that the production team offered Sullivan a large amount of money. She told The Guardian that they offered him “buckets of money” to return. But he simply said, “No thank you.”
Kaczmarek shared that Sullivan is currently getting his master’s degree at Harvard, studying Victorian literature. She said he is an incredible student and simply has no interest in returning to Hollywood.
Finding the New Dewey
After it became clear that Sullivan would not return, casting director Juel Bestrop started searching for a replacement. She found an actor from Canada named Caleb Ellsworth-Clark.
When the producers saw his audition tape, they were shocked. Katsky said that Ellsworth-Clark “actually looks more like Dewey than Erik now looks like Dewey.”
The original cast members also watched the tape. They admitted that if they did not know better, they would have thought it was actually Sullivan auditioning. Ellsworth-Clark fit in with the rest of the cast right away. Boomer said the new actor has the same “otherworldly quality” in his speech and eye movements that Sullivan had when he played Dewey.
Where Is Erik Per Sullivan Now?
Erik Per Sullivan started acting at a very young age. He played Dewey on Malcolm in the Middle from ages 7 to 14. After the show ended in 2006, he acted in a few more small projects. His last on-screen appearance was in the 2010 movie Twelve.
After that, he walked away from acting completely. He focused on his education instead. Kaczmarek gave a rare update about him in April 2024. She said he was studying at a very prestigious American university but asked her not to share the name.
Photos of Sullivan surfaced in April 2025. He was seen in Boston running errands and holding a coffee. He looked like a normal college student, far away from the entertainment industry.
Today, Sullivan is believed to be in his late 20s. He continues his studies at Harvard and has shown no interest in returning to acting for any project.
