The Yellowstone spinoff Marshals delivered a shocking start when it premiered on March 1, 2026, revealing that Kayce Dutton’s (Luke Grimes) wife, Monica (Kelsey Asbille) , had died of cancer before the events of the new series. Now, with the emotional weight of that loss driving Kayce’s new path as a U.S. Marshal, the cast is teasing that the drama is only getting started. As the first season heads toward its finale, the tension between Kayce and his former Navy SEAL teammate, Pete “Cal” Calvin (Logan Marshall-Green) , is set to explode in a way that could change everything for the show’s hero.

The Heavy Price of Kayce’s Past

When Marshals begins, audiences find Kayce at the lowest point of his life. His wife has passed away, and he is struggling to connect with his son, Tate (Brecken Merrill) , while navigating a new career as part of an elite U.S. Marshals team in Montana. The team is led by Cal, a man who shares a complicated history with Kayce from their time in the military.

According to showrunner Spencer Hudnut, placing Kayce in this state of grief was essential to making the spinoff work. “Any hero’s journey needs to begin in tragedy,” Hudnut explained. “In Yellowstone, Kayce and Monica had such a happy ending. We needed to turn his world upside down.”

For Grimes, this emotional reset was a tough sell at first. “The way that Yellowstone ended for Kayce was that he literally rode off into the sunset,” Grimes told Entertainment Weekly. “Obviously we can’t just watch this guy have his dream life. There’s no drama. Something’s gonna have to happen that gets in the way of him having that.”

A Friendship Built on Secrets

The bond between Cal and Kayce is rooted in their shared military experience, but Logan Marshall-Green revealed that the history between the two characters is far from simple. In a recent interview, the actor explained that while Cal sees Kayce as a brother, he is unaware of the dark duties Kayce performed as the “enforcer” of the Yellowstone Ranch.

“There is definitely history with Cal and Kayce,” Marshall-Green told CNET. “I think he saw Kayce’s need for purpose because of what he was going through. The reason he could understand that is because of another relationship they both shared. That relationship will be doled out, not in a linear, procedural way. Actually, the show will evolve into something much less linear, with flashbacks. We’re going to go back to Afghanistan, eventually.”

However, the peace between the two men is on borrowed time. Marshall-Green teased that the end of the season will bring a major confrontation when Cal finally learns the full truth about what Kayce did to protect the Dutton family.

“By the end of the season, those questions are going to start getting answered,” Marshall-Green said. “There’s going to be a lot of strife when Cal realizes exactly who Kayce is, and has become, and what he’s done since leaving the SEALs. And it’s not so pretty.”

The Weight of a Gut Punch Finale

For Grimes, the journey Kayce is on is one of survival. He has lost his soulmate, and the only way forward is to find a new purpose. The actor revealed that he was moved to tears when he first read the scene where Kayce speaks to Monica’s grave—a moment he described as a “gut punch” that ultimately pushes Kayce to accept the Marshal’s badge.

“The scene is why Kayce accepts the ‘Marshals’ badge. His dream life is gone. He has no choice but to try something else.” – Luke Grimes

That scene, set to Grimes’ own song “Haunted,” shows Kayce at Monica’s grave, confessing that the best part of him died with her. It is a raw moment that establishes just how much Kayce has lost. Now, as the season progresses, he must balance his grief with the high-stakes work of the Marshal service, all while keeping his past from destroying his new future.

What This Means for the Marshal Team

While Kayce is the emotional core of the show, the Marshals team itself is full of new dynamics. Arielle Kebbel plays Belle Skinner, a former ATF undercover specialist who joins the Montana office. She told People that working alongside Grimes has been exciting, especially as audiences get to see a different side of Kayce Dutton.

“It’s so cool to work alongside him, but also see him in action, because it really is a totally different side to his character,” Kebbel said. “I know you got pieces of it in Yellowstone, but because this is picking up where that started so long ago, it’s exciting. I think people are gonna like it.”

The procedural nature of the show allows for deep dives into Montana’s crime world, but the central thread remains Kayce’s internal battle. As he tries to find a “new beginning” for himself and Tate, the secrets of his past—particularly those tied to his time as a Dutton—threaten to tear apart the only support system he has left.

Marshals airs Sundays on CBS and streams on Paramount+. The first season is currently underway, with new episodes releasing weekly.
