The Yellowstone universe keeps growing. Luke Grimes returned as Kayce Dutton in ‘Marshals’, and the show is already getting a second season. CBS announced the renewal just two episodes into the first season.
The series premiered on March 1, 2026, and pulled in huge numbers. The first episode brought in 20.6 million viewers across CBS and Paramount+ within seven days. That makes it the most-streamed episode of a CBS show ever on Paramount+. It also marked the biggest network series premiere without a football lead-in since ‘Young Sheldon’ in 2017.
A Speedy Renewal Based on Strong Ratings
CBS moved fast on this one. The network officially picked up ‘Marshals’ for a second season on March 11, 2026. Getting a renewal after only two episodes is rare for a broadcast network. But the numbers made the decision simple.
The live audience for the premiere hit 9.52 million viewers. That number grew to 20.6 million after counting streaming and delayed viewing. The second episode held strong with 8.4 million live viewers. The show is clearly bringing in the Yellowstone crowd while also finding new viewers.
Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment, praised the show’s performance. She said in a statement:
“Marshals delivered a breakout performance, capturing a massive audience across platforms and quickly establishing itself as one of TV’s most powerful new series. The overwhelming viewer response speaks to the strength of the Yellowstone world, the bold character driven storytelling from the creative team and the dynamic cast performances led by Luke Grimes.”
What ‘Marshals’ Is About and How It’s Different From ‘Yellowstone’
‘Marshals’ follows Kayce Dutton after the events of Yellowstone. The show takes a different direction than the original series. It is a procedural drama, meaning each episode focuses on a new case. This format is closer to shows like ‘NCIS’ or ‘Tracker’.
Luke Grimes explained the difference in an interview. He said the spinoff is more action-driven. “A lot quicker pace, there’s a lot of action in the show,” he told Entertainment Tonight.
The story picks up with Kayce living on his ranch, East Camp, after leaving the Dutton family land. He gets pulled into working with an elite team of U.S. Marshals led by his old friend Pete Calvin, played by Logan Marshall-Green. The team includes Arielle Kebbel, Ash Santos, and Tatanka Means.
Fans of Yellowstone will see familiar faces. Brecken Merrill returns as Kayce’s son Tate. Gil Birmingham and Mo Brings Plenty are back as Thomas Rainwater and Mo.
Monica’s Death and Kayce’s New Path
The first episode of ‘Marshals’ delivered a major shock. Viewers learned that Monica Dutton, Kayce’s wife played by Kelsey Asbille, died between the end of Yellowstone and the start of this spinoff. The cause of death was cancer linked to toxic waste dumping on the Broken Rock Reservation.
Luke Grimes opened up about this creative choice in an interview with Postmedia. He said the change was necessary to move Kayce’s story forward.
“When I heard that idea I was a little broken-hearted because I love Kelsey and I loved working with her. To this day, she’s the best actor I’ve ever worked with. I was sad to see that storyline go … but I realized that this is a motor now for Kayce to make some big changes and try some new things.”
Grimes also shared that the ending for Kayce in Yellowstone felt complete. “He rode off into the sunset and it was really beautiful,” he said. But the new series gives him a reason to keep going.
The show also explores Kayce’s past as a Navy SEAL, a part of his backstory that Yellowstone did not fully cover. Grimes called this a “gold mine” for the character.
What We Know About ‘Marshals’ Season 2 So Far
The renewal came very early, so details about the second season are still limited. The first season will run for 13 episodes. Since the show received the green light in March 2026, production on Season 2 can begin soon.
The creative team remains the same. Spencer Hudnut, who previously worked on CBS’ ‘SEAL Team’, created the show and serves as showrunner. Taylor Sheridan and John Linson, the creators of Yellowstone, are executive producers alongside David Glasser, Art Linson, and others.
The production comes from Paramount Television Studios and 101 Studios. The show airs on CBS and streams the next day on Paramount+.
