The team behind Daredevil: Born Again has addressed the question many fans have been asking: why are only some of the original Defenders returning for the show’s second season? While Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones is confirmed to appear when the show returns, Mike Colter’s Luke Cage and Finn Jones’ Iron Fist will not be joining her—at least not yet.
Daredevil: Born Again executive producer Sana Amanat and showrunner Dario Scardapane recently sat down with Entertainment Weekly to discuss the upcoming season. The conversation naturally turned to the absence of two of the four core Netflix-era heroes. Their explanation came down to a simple but honest reason: there is only so much time to tell a good story.
The Challenge of Limited Episode Time
With only eight episodes in the season, the creative team had to make difficult choices about which characters to bring back and how to use them. Amanat explained that the priority was being careful and thoughtful with the limited time they have.
“We want to just at least be thoughtful with the limited time that we have, but be thoughtful with why they’re here and why they’re returning and where they’ve been and establish them in the context of this world.” – Sana Amanat, Executive Producer
Scardapane added a straightforward perspective on the production challenges. He noted that when working with only eight episodes per season, the creative space fills up very quickly. There are many characters the team would love to explore, but they simply cannot include everyone in a single season.
He also shared a personal reason for prioritizing Jessica Jones, mentioning that both he and Amanat have been longtime fans of the character. “We are diehard JJ fans from way back,” Scardapane said.
Why Jessica Jones Made the Cut
While fans may be disappointed about Luke Cage and Iron Fist sitting out this season, the creative team had a clear vision for why Jessica Jones was the right choice for the current storyline.
Scardapane explained that Jessica Jones has been part of the conversation since he first joined the Daredevil: Born Again project. Her character fits naturally into the show’s central conflict, which involves vigilantes being hunted by Mayor Wilson Fisk’s administration.
“When you’re doing a story about ‘vigilantes are now being hunted,’ ‘vigilantes are now underdogs,’ what does that look like with that particular underdog? And that just puts a smile on a writer’s face,” Scardapane said.
The showrunner also pointed to the natural chemistry between Charlie Cox’s Daredevil and Ritter’s Jessica Jones. He described the banter between the two actors as “so damn good,” adding that the team wanted to bring that energy into the show.
Building a Thoughtful Return for Each Character
Amanat emphasized that the team wants every returning character to have a meaningful purpose in the story. The goal is not simply to include familiar faces for the sake of nostalgia, but to give each hero a clear reason for being in the story.
The creative team wants to show where these characters have been since their Netflix series ended in 2019 and establish how they fit into the current world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This approach takes time and care, which is why the team chose to focus on one returning Defender per season.
Season 1 brought back Jon Bernthal’s Punisher, giving fans a chance to see where Frank Castle has been. Season 2 will do the same for Jessica Jones. This pattern suggests that Luke Cage and Iron Fist could receive similar treatment in future seasons.
What This Means for a Full Defenders Reunion
When asked directly about whether fans can expect a full Defenders reunion in future seasons, Scardapane offered a careful response. He said that decision is not really up to him, but he made it clear that Jessica Jones is with the team because her character fits the story they are telling.
The showrunner has previously mentioned that the team is thinking about how to bring back other Defenders characters, including Luke Cage and Iron Fist. However, he stressed that any such return would need to feel earned and serve the story rather than just adding characters for the sake of it.
There is still reason for hope among fans who want to see the full team reunite. Mike Colter recently confirmed that he has been talking to Marvel about potentially reprising his role as Luke Cage. Finn Jones has also hinted that he has been training, leading to speculation that Danny Rand could return at some point.

Setting the Stage for Future Seasons
The decision to hold back Luke Cage and Iron Fist for now appears to be a deliberate storytelling choice. Daredevil: Born Again is first and foremost Matt Murdock’s show, and the creative team wants to ensure that any additional heroes who appear do not distract from his journey.
By bringing back one Defender at a time, the show can give each character the attention they deserve. This approach allows the writers to explore where each hero has been and how they have changed since their Netflix days.
The upcoming season will show Jessica Jones dealing with what Scardapane described as “interesting life events” that the team wanted to explore. This suggests that the character has grown and changed in meaningful ways since viewers last saw her, and the show will take time to show that development.
