Netflix has set a global release date for The Rip, the upcoming crime thriller starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. The film will premiere on January 16, 2026. The duo, known for their long-time friendship and collaborations, both star in and produce the movie under their studio, Artists Equity.
Directed by Joe Carnahan (Narc, Smokin’ Aces), The Rip follows a group of Miami cops who find millions in cash hidden in an abandoned stash house. As word spreads about the money, their trust in each other falls apart. The film is inspired by true events and classic 1970s cop thrillers like Serpico and Heat.
“The Rip came out of a deeply personal experience that my friend went through, both as a father and as head of tactical narcotics for the Miami-Dade police department,” Carnahan told Netflix’s Tudum. “It’s inspired by his life and my love for classic ’70s cop thrillers.”
The title refers to Miami police slang for confiscating illegal goods. “The Rip is Miami cop talk for ‘taking the bad guy’s stuff,’” Carnahan explained.
Who’s in the Cast?
Alongside Damon and Affleck, The Rip features:
- Steven Yeun (Beef, The Walking Dead)
- Teyana Taylor (A Thousand and One)
- Sasha Calle (The Flash)
- Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights)
- Catalina Sandino Moreno (Maria Full of Grace)
- Néstor Carbonell (Shōgun)

First Look and Behind-the-Scenes
At Netflix’s Tudum 2025 event, Affleck joked about Damon’s long gray beard, grown for his role in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. The duo also shared a first-look teaser, comparing The Rip to Training Day and Heat.
“I trusted Matt would shave the beard before Tudum — and here we are,” Affleck joked during the event.
Filming began in October 2024 in Los Angeles and New Jersey, wrapping in December. The movie is now in post-production.
Damon and Affleck’s Longtime Partnership
The two have worked together since childhood, co-writing Good Will Hunting (1997), which won them an Oscar. They’ve since starred in films like Dogma (1999), The Last Duel (2021), and Air (2023).
“Working with Matt and Ben was the best of both worlds,” Carnahan said. “They backed my decisions every step of the way.”
Their production company, Artists Equity, launched in 2022, with Air being their first hit. The Rip is their latest project before upcoming films like The Instigators on Apple TV+.
