The second season of Mayfair Witches is set to introduce a new chapter for the series, taking fans to the mist-covered lands of Scotland, where the Mayfair family’s ancient roots are deeply entrenched in witchcraft. The upcoming season will see Rowan (Alexandra Daddario) exploring the dark secrets of her lineage and encountering a faction of the Mayfairs who have remained true to their ancestral traditions.
The Scottish Mayfairs
The core of the new season revolves around Rowan’s journey to claim leadership of the Mayfair family and uncover the mysteries surrounding the family’s past. Showrunner Esta Spalding shared insights at the season 2 premiere in Los Angeles, emphasizing that this installment would delve deeper into how the family intends to incorporate Lasher, a powerful spirit, into their plans. Spalding teased that Rowan’s discovery of these secrets will reveal significant connections to Scotland, where another branch of the Mayfair family resides.
“The central story of the season is Rowan trying to become the leader of the Mayfair family and discovering the mysteries of the family, particularly how they plan to use or incorporate Lasher into the family,” Spalding explained at the premiere event, co-hosted by Entertainment Weekly and AMC.
Ties to Anne Rice’s Legacy
In line with Anne Rice’s original work, the second book of her Lives of the Mayfair Witches series features a segment set in Scotland. Esta Spalding confirmed that the new season will explore this part of the Mayfair saga, bringing the mysterious and often diabolical Scottish Mayfairs into the fold.
“We’re introducing a group of Scottish Mayfairs who are really diabolical,” Spalding revealed. This group’s connection to Julien Mayfair—a pivotal character in the season, played by Ted Levine—is crucial to the plot. Julien’s influence over the Scottish Mayfairs plays a key role in the development of the season, with these witches being described as fiercely loyal to him and bound by a strict tradition.
“The Scottish Mayfairs are very in the thrall of Julien. They’ve been trained in some way. They’re connected to Julien in some way,” said Spalding, highlighting the powerful and somewhat sinister bond between these witches and their forebears.
A Tradition-Chained Family
Mark Johnson, executive producer of Mayfair Witches and overseer of the larger AMC Anne Rice universe, warned that the Scottish Mayfairs are deeply rooted in tradition. Unlike the New Orleans branch of the family, who are still uncovering their history, the Scottish Mayfairs are firmly tied to their old ways.
“They truly are chained to tradition,” Johnson remarked, noting the differences in the cultural and magical practices between the American and Scottish branches of the family. He highlighted that the American Mayfairs are still in the early stages of understanding their legacy, whereas the Scottish counterparts have lived within their established practices for generations.
The producers also emphasized the authenticity of the Scottish setting, despite filming taking place in Ireland. The production team worked with Scottish actors and advisors to ensure that the Scottish Mayfairs’ depiction would feel as true to the country’s rich witchcraft history as possible.
A Wild Ride Ahead
Fans can expect a dramatic continuation of Rowan’s journey and the increasing tension between her and the forces within her family. Harry Hamlin, who plays Cortland Mayfair, teased a thrilling season ahead, commenting on the script’s twists: “I’m reading the script going, what the f—?” The producers promised a season filled with shocking developments as the characters venture deeper into the complexities of their heritage and confront the mysterious, dark forces at play.
Mayfair Witches season 2 will premiere on January 5, 2025, on AMC and AMC+.
