Paramount+ has set Friday, January 15, 2027, as the premiere date for the fifth and final season of Mayor of Kingstown. Jeremy Renner returns as Mike McLusky for eight episodes, and David Morse joins the cast as an FBI agent who threatens to pull apart the deals that keep the town running.
Final season lands on Paramount+ in January
The announcement came on October 20, 2026, along with 15 first-look photos from the new season. The final run is shorter than usual. Seasons 1 through 4 each had 10 episodes, while season 5 will have eight. Paramount+ confirmed the shorter order when it renewed the show in January 2026 and said the fifth season would be the last.
The show has been one of the streaming service’s stronger crime dramas. Season 4 holds a 100% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, and the series has an 84% audience score. Taylor Sheridan and Hugh Dillon created the series, and Dave Erickson serves as showrunner.
The story picks up after Tracy’s murder
Season 4 ended with Kyle McLusky (Taylor Handley) killing Merle Callahan (Richard Brake) after Callahan murdered Kyle’s wife, Tracy McLusky (Nishi Munshi). Mike helped set up the meeting so Kyle could get his revenge.
The official logline for season 5 says the new episodes begin in the aftermath of that killing.
“This season, in the wake of Tracy’s murder and the vengeance visited upon Callahan by Mike (Jeremy Renner) and Kyle (Taylor Handley), FBI agent Russell Hardy (David Morse) arrives in Kingstown searching for the ‘fugitive’ Callahan. A true lawman, Agent Hardy threatens to unearth all of Mike’s sins and secrets, and disrupt Kingstown’s tenuous balance of power.” — Official Mayor of Kingstown season 5 logline
Callahan is dead, but the official story treats him as a fugitive. That gap is where the final season’s pressure comes from. Mike has spent years fixing problems outside the law. An FBI agent asking the right questions is a different kind of threat.
David Morse brings a new kind of pressure to Kingstown
David Morse joins the cast as Russell Hardy, described as a true lawman. Morse is known for The Green Mile, The Hurt Locker and World War Z. His character is not a gang leader or a crooked official. He is a federal investigator with the resources and patience to follow paperwork, phone records and witness statements.
The first-look photos show Hardy standing apart from the usual Kingstown crowd, watching rather than shouting. Entertainment Weekly noted that Morse is taking on the role of the season’s main antagonist, working to expose Mike’s secrets while the town’s future hangs in the balance.
Edie Falco returns as Nina Hobbs, along with Laura Benanti as Cindy Stephens, Hugh Dillon as Ian Ferguson, Tobi Bamtefa as Deverin “Bunny” Washington, Derek Webster as Stevie, Necar Zadegan as Evelyn Foley, Nichole Galicia as Rebecca and Lennie James as Frank Moses.
Jeremy Renner calls the show part of his recovery
Filming on the final season began in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in March 2026 and wrapped on June 30, 2026. Renner marked the end of production with an Instagram post thanking the cast and crew. He also spoke about how the series fit into his recovery from a 2023 snowplow accident.
“Today our production closes down for our SEASON 5 of @mayorofkingstown. Today we celebrate. Today we are filled with gratitude. I am so very thankful for all of your support over the years—it has given my stride and purpose in my recovery and love in my heart. Thank you cast and crew for carrying me through when necessary.” — Jeremy Renner, Instagram
Renner had already given fans a warning about the final season on social media.
“No one is safe this season …. I mean Nobody!” — Jeremy Renner, Instagram
The final season was not the original plan. Hugh Dillon had said in past interviews that Taylor Sheridan had an ending mapped out for season 7. Paramount+ chose to end the show at season 5 instead, two seasons earlier than that plan. The shorter eight-episode order makes the final run tighter than any previous season.
Fans are split between relief and disappointment
The show’s Instagram announcement drew mixed reactions. Some viewers were happy to have a date. Others were not ready for the show to end.
“5th sounds great… final sounds sad!!” — Instagram commenter, via The Pioneer Woman
“I literally said ‘oh yay!’ then ‘oh no!’ Final season” — Instagram commenter, via The Pioneer Woman
Another commenter raised the seven-season plan directly.
“I thought Taylor Sheridan said it was going to have 7 seasons?! Only 8 more episodes isn’t enough.” — Instagram commenter, via The Pioneer Woman
The frustration is easy to follow. Mayor of Kingstown has spent four seasons building a large cast of fixers, cops, prisoners and gang leaders. Eight episodes is the smallest space the show has ever had to close those stories.
