Fox’s crime drama Memory of a Killer just delivered one of the biggest surprises of its first season. The show revealed the identity of the mysterious Ferryman in Episode 8, and it turns out to be someone viewers have been watching from the very beginning.
FBI Agent Linda Grant, played by Gina Torres, is the person who ordered the hit on Angelo Doyle’s daughter Maria. The episode, titled “Tailored by Fabroni,” aired on March 23, 2026, and completely changed how audiences see the character who has been investigating Angelo’s crimes.
The Ferryman Identity Finally Comes to Light
For weeks, viewers have been guessing who the Ferryman could be. The name comes from Greek mythology—Charon, the ferryman who carries souls across the river to the underworld. Co-showrunner Aaron Zelman had teased this connection earlier in the season, calling it a “compelling metaphor” that would be explained.
Episode 8 showed Angelo piecing together clues. After getting information from Dave (Peter Gadiot) about how Agent Grant questions people “as if she already knows the answer,” Angelo reviewed his past meetings with her. The show then revealed that Grant’s son was Robert Parks, and her granddaughter lost her father to violence. During a flashback to her son’s wake, Grant picked up a doll—her son’s favorite toy called The Ferryman—and promised her granddaughter she would bring the person responsible to justice.
The revelation means the FBI agent investigating Angelo’s connection to various crimes is actually the same person who tried to have his daughter killed. Grant has been using her position to get close to Angelo while hiding her true motives.
What Happened Before the Big Reveal
Before the Ferryman’s identity was exposed, Episode 8 had several key moments. Dave continued his investigation into a missing button from Angelo’s jacket found at a crime scene. He visited the Fabroni tailor shop, pretending to be Angelo’s friend, and confirmed that Angelo’s jacket was missing a button.
Meanwhile, Angelo tracked down an address linked to a lawyer named Gilchrist. That address turned out to be the home of Dr. Robert Parks’ widow, Julia, who was hosting a bereavement group. Angelo attended under a fake name and spoke about losing his wife. After the meeting, Julia mentioned Gilchrist as the lawyer helping her family.
Dave eventually confronted Angelo directly. He admitted he knew Angelo killed Bloch but said he would not report it because he understood Angelo was protecting his daughter. However, Dave warned Angelo about Grant’s persistence, which ultimately helped Angelo figure out the truth.
How the Show Set Up the Mystery Earlier
The series had been building toward this reveal from the beginning. Episode 2 introduced the Ferryman name when Angelo learned that someone using that identity had hired the hitman who shot at Maria. At the time, Zelman told interviewers that viewers should pay attention to the Greek mythology reference.
Gina Torres joined the cast in September 2025 as a recurring character. Her casting was announced as Agent Grant, an FBI investigator looking into the crimes connected to Angelo’s double life. Her character appeared frequently throughout the early episodes, always asking questions and pushing Angelo to reveal more than he wanted.
In Episode 4, Grant was shown examining a crime scene connected to Angelo. She noticed details that others missed, showing how sharp her investigative skills were. Now viewers understand that her sharpness came from a personal mission.
What This Means for the Remaining Episodes
Memory of a Killer’s first season has 10 episodes total. Episode 8 aired on March 23, leaving two episodes left in the season. The show is available to watch on Fox every Monday at 9/8c, with episodes streaming the next day on Hulu.
Now that Angelo knows Grant is the Ferryman, but Grant does not know he knows, the remaining episodes will show how this confrontation plays out. Angelo has been dealing with early-onset Alzheimer’s throughout the season, which has caused him to forget details about past jobs and put his family at risk.
The show also revealed earlier this season that Angelo’s brother has Alzheimer’s, and Angelo has been visiting him in a memory care facility. These visits show what Angelo might face as his condition worsens.

Audience Response to the Twist
The reveal has generated discussion among viewers who have been following the weekly episodes. Many had suspected other characters, including Dutch (Michael Imperioli), Angelo’s handler and friend. Episode 4 recaps on fan sites showed viewers leaning toward Dutch as the most likely suspect.
The choice to make Grant the Ferryman recontextualizes every scene she has had with Angelo throughout the season. Her questioning at the hospital after Maria was shot, her grocery store conversation with Angelo, and her investigation of crime scenes all now carry a different meaning.
The show’s first season premiered on January 25, 2026, with a two-night event. Early reviews were mixed, with critics saying the show had potential but needed to find its footing. The Ferryman reveal suggests the creators had a clear plan for where the story was heading.
