The Apple TV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters just delivered its most mind-bending episode yet. Season 2 Episode 7, titled “String Theory,” dropped on April 10, 2026, and it finally brings the show’s time travel concept front and center.
The episode features something fans have been waiting for since the show began. Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell, who play older and younger versions of Lee Shaw, finally share scenes together across decades. The moment happens when a radio signal connects the present day with 1962 inside the mysterious dimension called Axis Mundi.
Two Lee Shaws Connect Across Time
The older Lee Shaw (Kurt Russell) and Dr. Suzuki (Leo Ashizawa) are testing a device on Mount Osore. They want to open a rift and call Godzilla to stop the new Titan, Co-Cai (also known as Titan X). But something unexpected happens. Their radio picks up a signal from 1962.
On the other end is younger Lee Shaw (Wyatt Russell). He has been trapped in Axis Mundi for 15 days after his Operation Hourglass mission went wrong. His entire crew is dead. He is alone and desperate.
The older Lee does not reveal who he is right away. He pretends to be Mission Control. He guides his younger self to build a tracker and plant it on a Titan. The goal is to help younger Lee find a way back home.
“It was something we discussed even before we started shooting the first season. I was adamant about wanting something like this to happen.” – Kurt Russell on getting to act with his son
The moment becomes deeply emotional when younger Lee discovers Keiko Miura (Mari Yamamoto) is also trapped in Axis Mundi. She is nearby. He wants to run to her. The older Lee has to stop him.
The older Lee reveals his true identity. He tells his younger self that rescuing Keiko now would change everything. Her grandchildren, Cate Randa (Anna Sawai) and Kentaro Randa (Ren Watabe), might never exist. The older Lee has to convince his younger self to walk away from the woman he loves.
Wyatt Russell delivers a powerful performance in this scene. His face shows the pain of choosing duty over love. He forces himself to turn away from Keiko and continue the mission.
The Rules of Time Travel in the Monsterverse
The episode raises big questions about whether the past can be changed. The older Lee is very clear that some things must happen exactly as they did. He tells his younger self:
“It’s not about what you want. It’s about what needs to happen.”
The show suggests that time might work in a loop. The younger Lee does not remember this conversation when he gets older. The travel back to Earth might scramble his memory. This keeps the timeline intact.
Isabel Simmons (Amber Midthunder) introduces another time-related idea. She tells Kentaro she wants to create a world where G-Day never happened. G-Day is the 2014 attack when Godzilla destroyed San Francisco. Isabel believes that if they can change that event, her family would not have abandoned her.
Kentaro thinks she is crazy. But the idea is out there now. The show is clearly setting up bigger time travel concepts for future episodes.
Cate Randa Connects With Titan X
While the Lee Shaws deal with time travel, Cate Randa (Anna Sawai) and her grandmother Keiko work on the Titan mystery. Cate can hear Co-Cai’s infrasonic calls. She thinks the Titan is lost and scared, not dangerous.
They travel to a cursed village in Japan based on Bill Randa‘s old notes. Local legend speaks of women possessed by a demon. The drawings match Co-Cai perfectly.
Cate finds an old well. She feels the Titan’s vibrations strongly there. Despite Keiko’s warnings, she goes down into the well. The rope snaps and she falls. But she finds a series of tunnels that lead back to the surface.
When she comes back up, Cate is sure of one thing. Co-Cai is not the enemy. It needs their help.
Kentaro and Isabel’s Dangerous Plan
Kentaro Randa (Ren Watabe) continues to push people away. He is rude to May Hewitt (Kiersey Clemons) when she tries to apologize. She leaves his apartment and gets taken by Monarch agents.
Kentaro travels to Thailand to meet Isabel Simmons (Amber Midthunder). She is the adopted daughter of Walter Simmons, the CEO of Apex Cybernetics. Isabel explains that her parents stopped caring about her after her sister Maya was born.
She hates Apex as much as Kentaro hates Monarch. And she has a radical idea. She wants to use Axis Mundi to change the past. She wants to live in a world where G-Day never happened.
Kentaro is shocked. But Isabel seems serious. She wants his help to “create a new world.”
May Gets Pulled Back Into Monarch
May Hewitt (Kiersey Clemons) does not have a good episode. After Kentaro pushes her away, Monarch agents grab her outside his apartment. Tim (Joe Tippett) is furious with her for helping Brenda Holland.
Tim forces May to help them study a fragment of Co-Cai. The fragment still has the Apex neural implant lodged in it. May figures out that the implant is what knocked the Titan off its normal path.
This is important because a confused and lost Titan is more dangerous. May might be the only person who can help figure out how to stop Co-Cai before it hurts more people.
What the Episode Reveals About the Larger Story
“String Theory” does several important things for the Monsterverse series.
First, it confirms that time travel is now a real part of this world. The show is not just about monsters anymore. It is about whether the characters can change their past mistakes.
Second, it gives the Russell father-son duo their big moment. The show has been building toward this since season one. The payoff is emotional and well earned.
Third, it sets up a major conflict between saving the world or changing it. Isabel wants to erase G-Day. But that would mean Cate and Kentaro might never be born. Lee Shaw already chose not to change the past. The question is whether others will make the same choice.
Fourth, it makes Co-Cai more sympathetic. Cate believes the Titan is lost and needs help. This could change how the characters approach the threat.

The Russells Make TV Magic
The casting of Kurt and Wyatt Russell as the same character always seemed like a clever trick. Episode 7 proves it was much more than that.
The two actors bring a real emotional weight to the scene. Kurt Russell spoke with Den of Geek about wanting this moment since season one. He pushed the writers to make it happen.
“We actually tried something in the first season that was so powerful that they called me and they said, ‘We can’t do this. It just takes the whole show into a whole different direction.’ And then in season 2, I was once again immediately like, let’s make this happen.” – Kurt Russell
Wyatt Russell was there on set while his father filmed his lines. He watched the performance in a command trailer. This helped him respond in a more natural way during his own takes.
The result is one of the best scenes in the entire Monsterverse franchise. It proves that Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is not just a monster show. It is about regret, sacrifice, and the weight of the choices we make.
