Amazon MGM Studios is working on an adult animated series based on the popular comic book Monstress. The streaming service has brought in Steven Maeda, who helped create and run Netflix’s One Piece live-action show, to lead the project. The series will stream on Prime Video, and fans of the comic have been waiting for this news since the book first came out in 2015.

The Monstress comic, written by Marjorie Liu and illustrated by Sana Takeda, has won many awards over the years. It has received seven Eisner Awards and four Hugo Awards, making it one of the most celebrated comics of the past decade. The story takes place in a world that draws from Asian cultures and mixes fantasy with steampunk style art.

What is Monstress About?

The official description from Amazon shares the core idea of the show. The story follows a young woman who has a literal monster living inside her body. She sets out on a journey to understand her past and to get justice for her mother’s death. Along the way, she meets unusual friends, including a talking cat and a girl who is a fox-human mix. These characters find themselves in the middle of a war between humans and otherworldly forces.

The series asks a deeper question: when the world turns people into monsters, how can anyone overcome the darkness inside them? This theme runs through the comic books and will likely be a big part of the animated show as well.

The Creative Team Behind the Show

Steven Maeda will write and executive produce the series. He worked on popular shows like The X-Files and Lost before taking on One Piece at Netflix. Tiffany Greshler, who also worked with Maeda on One Piece, will join him as co-showrunner. The two will share the responsibility of running the production together.

The creators of the comic, Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda, are also on board as executive producers. This means they will help make sure the animated version stays true to what fans love about the original books. Jason Brown and Ryan Stayton from Hivemind will also serve as executive producers.

A Comic Book with Awards and Recognition

The Monstress comic first arrived in November 2015 through Image Comics. Since then, it has grown to 60 chapters and continues to tell new stories. The book has earned praise for both its writing and its art. Sana Takeda’s detailed artwork, which mixes fantasy elements with Art Deco style, has become one of the most recognized looks in modern comics.

The series has won multiple awards over the years. It took home Eisner Awards in 2018, 2022, and 2023. In 2018, it received the Harvey Award for Book of the Year. It also won big at the Hugo Awards in 2017 and 2018, along with a special award at the 2022 World Fantasy Awards.

Marjorie Liu shared in a 2022 interview with Entertainment Weekly that she already knows how the comic story ends. When asked about a potential finale for the book series, she said:

“Oh yeah, I’ve already written it. I’ve already written the final scene. I just don’t know how long it’s going to take to get there.”

This shows that the creators have a clear vision for where the story is heading, which could help with the animated adaptation as well.

What to Expect from the Animated Version

The show is being made as an adult animated series, which means it will likely keep the darker and more mature elements from the comic. Amazon has been adding more animated shows for grown-up audiences, and Monstress fits into that plan. The studio is treating this project as a priority, given the reputation of the people involved and the awards the comic has won.

The animation style will need to capture the rich detail that Sana Takeda brought to the comic pages. Her art combines fantasy creatures, mechanical designs, and deep colors that create a world unlike any other. Translating that look into animation will be one of the main challenges for the production team.

No Release Date Yet

Amazon has not announced when the series will be available on Prime Video. The project is still in development, which means the team is working on scripts and getting everything ready for production. Fans should expect more news about casting and release timelines as the project moves forward.

For viewers in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, India, and other countries with Prime Video access, the show will stream on the platform once it is finished. As of now, no specific release window has been set.
