At a recent reunion for the show’s 10th anniversary, Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail shared a surprising story. He revealed that he was recently targeted by a hacker who, after being discovered, had one simple request: to pitch a spinoff idea for the beloved series.

The Hacker’s Unexpected Pitch

The unusual event took place when Esmail was the target of an orchestrated prank call. Instead of ending the call, Esmail played along and spoke with the caller. He soon realized he was talking to a dedicated fan of Mr. Robot. After a back-and-forth conversation, Esmail asked the hacker what the purpose of the call was.

The fan on the other end of the line confessed, “Dude, I just really want season of Carly Chaikin [who played Darlene, Elliotโ€™s sister] and Joey Bada$$ [who played Leon] – can you do that spinoff?” The hacker was specifically asking for a new series centered on the characters Darlene Alderson and Leon.

Esmail’s Response to the Spinoff Idea

The pitch was made to an audience of eager fans at the New York Comic Con, where Esmail was celebrating the show’s 10th anniversary alongside stars Rami Malek and Christian Slater. While acknowledging the passion behind the request, Esmail explained his position on returning to the world of Mr. Robot.

“I would love nothing more than to go back into the Mr. Robot world,” Esmail told the audience. “But we told that story and ended it in a really great way.”

His statement made it clear that while he appreciates the continued enthusiasm for the characters, he feels the main narrative reached its perfect conclusion and he has no plans to create more content within that universe.

A Look Back at Mr. Robot

Mr. Robot premiered on the USA Network in 2015 and ran for four seasons, concluding in December 2019. The series stars Rami Malek as Elliot Alderson, a cybersecurity engineer and hacker who struggles with social anxiety disorder, clinical depression, and dissociative identity disorder. He is recruited by the insurrectionary anarchist known as Mr. Robot (Christian Slater) to join a hacktivist group called “fsociety.” Their goal is to take down the massive conglomerate E Corp, which Elliot sees as the embodiment of corporate evil.

The show was celebrated for its authentic portrayal of hacking culture and its psychological depth. It won numerous awards, including two Golden Globes and three Primetime Emmy Awards, and helped launch Malek’s career to new heights, leading to his Academy Award win for Bohemian Rhapsody.

The Inspiration Behind the Original Series

In past interviews, Esmail has explained that the inspiration for Mr. Robot came from three main sources: his own interest in hacking, the 2008 financial crisis, and the Arab Spring. He was fascinated by how young people in Arab countries used technology and social media to rise up and create change, which mirrored the revolutionary themes in his show.

Reflecting on the current world situation at the reunion, Esmail noted that the crises explored in the show now seem almost mild. When asked if Mr. Robot could be made today, he replied, “Are you kidding? Honestly, itโ€™s like the show wasnโ€™t nearly as f*cked up as it would be today! Itโ€™s like Pleasantville, now.”

The Legacy of Mr. Robot

The series concluded its four-season run on December 22, 2019. Esmail had always envisioned a specific ending for the show, and he stayed true to that vision, bringing Elliot Alderson’s complex journey to a close. While fans may hope for a return to the world of fsociety through spinoffs like the one proposed by the hacker, it appears the story has been told exactly as its creator intended.
