Apple TV+ has built a reputation for delivering high-quality science fiction. With shows like Severance, Silo, and Foundation, the streaming service has become a go-to destination for genre fans. Now, the platform is preparing to release its most ambitious project yet: an adaptation of William Gibson‘s landmark 1984 novel, Neuromancer.

After years of being labeled “unfilmable,” the 10-episode series is scheduled to arrive in 2026. With filming already completed in locations including Tokyo, London, and Istanbul, the show is officially in post-production. For viewers waiting for the next season of Severance, this new series might be exactly what they need.

Why This Adaptation Has Been So Hard to Make

For decades, Hollywood considered Neuromancer too difficult to translate to the screen. The book introduced concepts like cyberspace, artificial intelligences with god-like ambitions, and a gritty vision of the future where corporations hold more power than governments. The story follows Case, a once-great hacker whose nervous system was damaged by former employers, leaving him unable to access the digital world he loves. He gets a second chance from a mysterious new employer but finds himself trapped in a dangerous web of espionage.

The novel’s complex inner monologues and abstract storytelling made it a challenge for filmmakers. Tim Miller, director of Deadpool, previously attempted a movie version, but the project never moved forward. Apple TV+ is taking a different approach by turning the dense source material into a television series, giving the story room to breathe.

A Cast Built for a Cyberpunk World

The casting for Neuromancer brings together a group of talented actors who fit the dark, high-tech world of the story. Callum Turner, known for his role in Masters of the Air and the Fantastic Beasts films, plays the lead role of Case. Turner shared that filming has wrapped and that the production team shot for two weeks in Tokyo, highlighting the global scale of the project.

Joining him is Briana Middleton (Sharper) as Molly, a street samurai with mirrored eyes and blades hidden under her fingernails. The cast also includes Mark Strong (Sherlock Holmes) as the mysterious Armitage, Clémence Poésy (Harry Potter) as Lady 3Jane, and Peter Sarsgaard, Dane DeHaan, and Max Irons in key roles.

Behind the camera, Graham Roland (Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan) and J.D. Dillard (Devotion) serve as creators and executive producers. Dillard is directing the pilot episode, with Roland acting as showrunner. Both have expressed their excitement about bringing Gibson’s world to life, calling the project a dream collaboration that began nearly a decade ago.

Thematic Connections to Severance

One of the biggest reasons for excitement around Neuromancer is how it connects to the themes that made Severance a cultural phenomenon. Both shows explore what happens when the human mind becomes separated from the physical body.

In Severance, employees at Lumon Industries undergo a surgical procedure that splits their work memories from their personal lives. In Neuromancer, characters view their bodies as “meat” prisons and only feel truly alive when they are plugged into the Matrix. The novel also introduces ROM constructs—digital copies of human consciousness preserved after death, similar to the way Severance explores fractured identities.

There is even a plot point in the book involving a sex worker who receives a chip in her brain that allows her to disconnect during work. She enjoys the “free money” but later experiences nightmares as memories from her work state bleed into her conscious mind—a concept that fans of Severance will find very familiar.

Filling the Void Left by Altered Carbon

Beyond Severance, Neuromancer also carries the weight of expectations from fans of canceled cyberpunk shows. Netflix’s Altered Carbon, which ran for two seasons between 2018 and 2020, was beloved for its exploration of digital consciousness and corporate control. When Netflix canceled the series, it left a gap in the genre.

Altered Carbon expanded on ideas that Neuromancer first introduced decades ago. The concept of “jacking in” to cyberspace directly influenced the “cortical stacks” and “sleeving” technology seen in Altered Carbon. The grim cityscapes, powerful corporations, and questions about what it means to be human connect the two stories closely.

For fans still missing Altered Carbon, Neuromancer offers a return to the roots of the genre. It is not just a replacement but a chance to see the original text that inspired so much of modern science fiction brought to life with Apple TV+’s production budget.

The Importance of William Gibson’s Involvement

One major factor that sets this adaptation apart is the involvement of William Gibson himself. The author serves as an executive producer on the series and has been available to the creative team for consultation. He has reviewed drafts and offered suggestions to ensure the adaptation stays true to the spirit of his work.

This level of authorial oversight is rare for big-budget adaptations. It suggests that Apple TV+ is committed to honoring the source material rather than simply using the name to attract viewers.

What to Expect from the Release

As of today, Neuromancer does not have a specific premiere date. Industry reports point to a late 2026 release window, though the extensive visual effects work required could affect the timeline. The series will consist of 10 episodes and is expected to stream globally on Apple TV+.

Filming took place across multiple international locations, including Tokyo, London, Canada, and Istanbul, reflecting the global scope of Gibson’s story. This international production style is typical for Apple TV+’s biggest sci-fi offerings.
