CBS is showing strong confidence in its new workplace comedy DMV by ordering a full season of episodes before the show even premieres. The series, which takes place at a Department of Motor Vehicles office in Los Angeles, will debut on October 13, 2025. In a unusual move for broadcast television, the network has already ordered seven additional episodes, bringing the first season to a full 20 episodes. The early vote of confidence suggests CBS believes it has found a winner in this comedy about the underpaid workers navigating rude customers and office politics.

The Premise and Setting

“DMV” is a single-camera workplace comedy set in the place everyone dreads going to most: the Department of Motor Vehicles. The series follows the quirky and lovable employees of the East Hollywood DMV office who are making minimum wage while doing a thankless job where customers are often annoyed before they even walk in the door. The show finds humor in the everyday chaos of bureaucracy, bad attitudes, and busted printers, all handled with minimum wage and maximum sarcasm. It’s the job nobody wants, but the hangout you won’t want to miss. The series is based on a short story by award-winning author Katherine Heiny, turning everyday bureaucratic struggles into comedic charm.

The People Behind the Scenes

The series was created by Dana Klein, known for her work on popular shows like “Friends” and “9JKL”. Klein serves as both the showrunner and an executive producer. She wrote the pilot episode and is heavily involved in the series development. The directing duties for the initial episodes are handled by Trent O’Donnell, who also serves as an executive producer. Other executive producers include Matt Kuhn, Aaron Kaplan of Kapital Entertainment, Wendi Trilling of TrillTV, and Robyn Meisinger. The production companies involved in bringing the series to life include Anonymous Content, CBS Studios, Kapital Entertainment, and TrillTV. Filming for the series takes place in Montreal, Canada, with production beginning on July 28, 2025.

Meet the Cast and Characters

The series features an ensemble cast led by several familiar faces. Tim Meadows, a veteran of “Saturday Night Live,” plays Gregg, a misanthropic former high school English teacher who has become a DMV examiner and just wants to quickly finish his driving tests. Harriet Dyer, from “Colin From Accounts,” plays Colette, a generous and quirky examiner who genuinely wants the driving students to pass their tests.

They are joined by Molly Kearney as Barbara, the boss at the DMV office. Alex Tarrant plays the handsome Noa, while Tony Cavalero appears as Vic, a former bouncer now working at the DMV. Rounding out the main cast is Gigi Zumbado as Ceci, the cheeky driver’s license photo taker who adds another layer of personality to the workplace dynamic.

Release Schedule and How to Watch

“DMV” is scheduled to premiere on CBS on Monday, October 13, 2025. The show will air in the 8:30-9:00 PM ET/PT time slot. For those who prefer streaming, episodes will be available on Paramount+, the streaming home for CBS programming. The first three episodes have confirmed titles and release dates, with the pilot launching on October 13, followed by “Stay In Your Lane” on October 20, and “Easy Pass” on October 27. The full season order of 20 episodes means viewers can expect plenty of DMV adventures throughout the television season.

Early Confidence from CBS

The decision to grant “DMV” a full season order before its premiere is somewhat unusual for a broadcast network. This early extension demonstrates that CBS has liked the episodes it has seen thus far. The series landed its initial series order in April 2025 and was nearing the end of production on its initial set of 13 episodes when the additional seven were ordered. This early vote of confidence suggests the network believes in the show’s potential to connect with audiences and become a lasting part of their comedy lineup.

The series represents one of four new shows CBS will debut in the fall 2025 season, alongside dramas “Boston Blue” and “Sheriff Country” and music competition “The Road.” With its early full-season pickup, “DMV” has already distinguished itself from the pack, generating additional curiosity about how this group of underpaid workers will turn the most dreaded government office into a source of comedy and heart.
