NewJeans, one of the most influential K-pop groups, has officially declared their departure from ADOR, despite the agency’s legal actions to validate their exclusive contract.
Legal Battle Between NewJeans and ADOR
On December 5, ADOR filed a lawsuit with the Seoul Central District Court, seeking confirmation of the validity of their exclusive agreement with NewJeans. The agency expressed disappointment over the situation, stating:
“We hoped to avoid resolving this matter through legal channels. However, we deemed it necessary to confirm for the artists and other stakeholders that an exclusive contract cannot be unilaterally terminated without valid grounds.”
ADOR emphasized the trust and mutual agreement upon which their contract was built, adding:
“Our upfront support was based on the belief in mutual growth over a defined period. If this basic agreement is not upheld, the company’s efforts and investments made in trust will be rendered futile.”
NewJeans Responds with Firm Stance
In an official statement released on December 6, NewJeans stood by their decision, confirming:
“As of November 29, 2024, we are no longer affiliated with ADOR.”
The group pointed to irreparable breaches of trust by both ADOR and its parent company, HYBE. They alleged that HYBE engaged in damaging tactics, such as slander and reverse marketing, while ADOR’s new management failed to protect their interests. The group explained:
“We have already generated profits exceeding the initial investment made by ADOR and HYBE. Considering the breakdown of trust, we believe staying with ADOR would expose us to further harm.”
NewJeans also referenced a clause in their contract that allowed termination in cases where ADOR failed to meet its obligations. The group stated:
“Forcing us to work under these circumstances for another five years is not only unreasonable but inhumane.”
Emergency Announcement and Future Plans
Prior to the official announcement, NewJeans held an emergency press conference on November 28, where they declared the termination of their contract, effective November 29. The group cited breaches by both HYBE and ADOR, asserting that these justified their decision without any penalty fees.
The members also expressed a desire to collaborate with Min Hee Jin, the former CEO of ADOR, moving forward. In their statement, they reassured fans of their dedication to music and their supporters:
“Once again, we stress that as of November 29, 2024, we are no longer part of ADOR. They have no right to interfere in our activities. While we anticipate challenges ahead, we are committed to pursuing a healthy music career and living a life dedicated to our fans who support us.”
