Newtopia, starring BLACKPINK’s Jisoo and Park Jung Min, has premiered its first two episodes, delivering a mix of romance, heartbreak, and a terrifying zombie outbreak. The drama quickly shifts from everyday life to a desperate fight for survival, leaving viewers on the edge of their seats.
A Love Story Interrupted
The initial episodes introduce Kang Yeong Ju (Jisoo), an office worker, and Lee Jae Yun (Park Jung Min), a military trainee. Despite their deep affection, their demanding schedules and differing life paths create a rift, leading to a painful separation. Jisoo and Park Jung Min portray the emotional turmoil of their characters with touching performances. Kang Yeong Ju, realizing her mistake, decides to visit Lee Jae Yun at his barracks in Gangnam. However, her plans for reconciliation are violently derailed by a sudden zombie outbreak.
The romantic reunion turns into a terrifying ordeal. Kang Yeong Ju’s desperate struggle to reach Lee Jae Yun, who is close by but unreachable, is heartbreaking. The narrative creates a poignant contrast: earlier, Kang Yeong Ju often ignored Lee Jae Yun’s calls, but now, during the apocalypse, she frantically tries to contact him while he’s unable to respond. The drama also highlights the darker side of human nature. In a chaotic scene, Kang Yeong Ju’s senior colleague is attacked and robbed, demonstrating that survival instincts can override morality even in extreme situations.
Jisoo shows growth in her acting, effectively conveying Kang Yeong Ju’s vulnerability as both a girlfriend and a daughter. While she excels in emotional scenes, there’s room for improvement in her portrayal of fear and intensity during the zombie attacks. Park Jung Min shines as Lee Jae Yun, balancing dark moments with charm and humor. He is both endearing as an awkward trainee and admirable as a courageous fighter. Im Sung Jae, as Private Ra In Ho, also gives a strong performance.
The first two episodes create a compelling narrative, mixing romance, action, and suspense. Viewers are left wondering if Kang Yeong Ju will reach the barracks and if Lee Jae Yun will survive the zombie onslaught.
