Obsession Creative Team Opens Up About Filming Difficulties and Their Unusual Storyboarding Method

The horror movie Obsession has taken the world by storm. Made on a tiny budget, the film has earned over $400 million at the box office. But the journey to create this hit was not simple. The creative team recently shared the real struggles they faced while filming and explained their one-of-a-kind method for planning every scene.

Obsession tells the story of Bear, played by Michael Johnston. He is a music store worker who likes his coworker Nikki. When she does not feel the same way, he uses a strange item called the One Wish Willow to make her love him. The wish comes true, but Nikki’s love turns into a dangerous obsession. Bear soon learns that getting what you wished for can be a nightmare.

The Biggest Challenge Was Keeping the Intensity Right

For Michael Johnston, playing Bear was mentally draining. The movie has many intense moments. Bear is constantly shocked and scared by Nikki’s behavior. Johnston said his main struggle was saving his energy for the right moments.

“My biggest challenge on the shoot was preserving my intensity. There’s a lot of really intense scenes. We would shoot all night and I really wanted to just give it 110% every time, but I learned pretty quickly that I had to save some for later.”

He explained that Curry Barker, the director, is a very visual filmmaker. Barker already knows how the movie will look in his head while they are filming. This meant Johnston only had to go all out for half of a scene. The rest of the time, he had to hold back to make the big moments stand out.

Using Video Game Technology to Plan the Movie

The most interesting part of the film’s creation was the storyboarding process. Curry Barker is a 26-year-old YouTuber and comedian making his first feature film. He knew exactly how he wanted the movie to look. But he found a new way to share his vision with the team when he met his Director of Photography, Taylor Clemons.

Clemons had a unique process. He would scan real-world areas with his phone using a LIDAR scanner. Then, he would put the scan into Unreal Engine, a powerful video game development tool. This allowed them to create digital puppets and move them around in a 3D space.

“Using that process, we went scene by scene and we storyboarded the entire movie. And what’s funny is we didn’t just storyboard. I would actually edit it. So I’d be like, ‘Then we’re going to cut this, then we’re going to cut back to this.’ With that little cartoon, you almost kind of had the movie all laid out.”

This method was a game-changer. Instead of just drawing pictures on paper, the team could actually see the movie before filming it. They could plan camera angles, cuts, and movements in a virtual space. This made sure everyone on the set knew exactly what they were trying to achieve.

A Low Budget and a Tight Schedule Added Pressure

The film was made for under $1 million. This meant the team had to be very smart and fast. The entire shoot lasted only 20 days. They did not have the luxury of time or money to fix mistakes later.

Curry Barker had a specific style for the film. He wanted to use long takes and avoid unnecessary cuts. He also decided to remove insert shots completely, except when a character was looking at something specific. This choice made the film feel more real and intense, but it also created a huge problem in editing.

Without extra shots to fall back on, Barker could not fix the pacing of scenes in post-production. He had to make sure everything worked perfectly on the day of filming. He described learning to “find the pacing on the day” as a very important lesson.

The Costume Designer Had to Get Creative with $6,000

The film’s success also brought attention to the work of Blair James, the costume designer. She had only $6,000 to dress the entire cast. This was a huge challenge, especially since one specific dress was needed in many copies.

The script mentioned a purple flower dress. James knew she had to make it work. Because the dress would be covered in blood and worn for long periods, she needed 12 identical versions. She spent hours searching the internet to find enough of them. James said she watched movies like Jennifer’s Body for inspiration. She wanted the clothes to show the characters’ personalities, not just look like they would get bloody.

Behind the Scenes Secrets and Family Help

The movie has many surprising details that fans are just learning about. Curry Barker got the idea for the film while watching The Simpsons. He saw the “Treehouse of Horror II” episode with the cursed monkey paw and thought it would make a great movie.

He also got help from his family. His mother, a graphic art designer, helped him create the look of the One Wish Willow. He wanted it to look like an object from the past that had been around forever. His father even wrote the creepy story that Nikki reads aloud during the party scene.

The Film’s Massive Success Despite the Struggles

All of this hard work paid off in a big way. Obsession was picked up by Focus Features after a bidding war with other big studios like A24 and NEON. The film became the highest-grossing horror movie of 2026 and the biggest release in the studio’s history.

The creative team’s willingness to try new things, like using video game software for storyboarding, helped them overcome the challenges of a low budget and a short schedule. Their unique approach to filmmaking turned a small indie project into a worldwide phenomenon.
