Orlando Bloom, a household name thanks to blockbuster franchises like “The Lord of the Rings” and “Pirates of the Caribbean,” has opened up about a terrifying ordeal that left him facing the possibility of never walking again.
Orlando Bloom: Balcony Fall Leads to Hospital Rush
In a recent appearance on the “What Now?” podcast with Trevor Noah, Bloom recounted a near-death experience from his early twenties. While visiting a friend’s apartment in London, a seemingly simple situation – a locked terrace door – turned into a life-changing event.
Bloom, ever the resourceful one, decided to climb down what he thought was a drainpipe to access the terrace. Tragically, the pipe wasn’t secure and gave way, sending him plummeting three floors. The fall landed him precariously balanced between railings and an old washing machine on a first-floor balcony.
The severity of the situation became clear when paramedics arrived. They informed Bloom of the chilling possibility: “We have a 20-year-old kid who may never walk again unless you take him in.” The ambulance ride itself was a slow and agonizing journey, taking a full five hours due to the seriousness of his injuries.
From “May Never Walk Again” to Miraculous Recovery
Doctors initially confirmed the paramedics’ fears. For four days after the fall, Bloom faced the daunting reality that he might never walk again. Thankfully, surgery proved successful, and ten days later, Bloom defied the odds and walked out of the hospital.
“It felt very restrictive all of a sudden and I was in a lot of pain,” Bloom shared about the aftermath of the accident. He credits his active lifestyle before the fall for aiding in his remarkable recovery.
Katy Perry’s unwavering support
Through this challenging time, Bloom found unwavering support in his fiancee, singer Katy Perry. In an interview with ET, Bloom described Perry as his biggest cheerleader, someone who constantly pushes him to be his best self. He further elaborated on their relationship during the “What Now?” podcast, highlighting their mutual respect and understanding for each other’s journeys.
Bloom and Perry, who met in 2016, share a daughter named Daisy Dove Bloom. Bloom also has a son from a previous relationship.
