The story of how Jamie and Claire Fraser’s parents found love is set to continue. The hit prequel Outlander: Blood of My Blood is officially coming back for a second season, promising more drama, romance, and time-traveling suspense for fans.
The new season was confirmed by the network Starz in a show of confidence back in June 2025, even before the first season premiered in August. Filming for the new episodes is already underway in Scotland, with the cast and crew hard at work.
The Story So Far
The first season of the prequel followed two parallel love stories set in different centuries. In 18th-century Scotland, Ellen MacKenzie and Brian Fraser defied their families and a forced marriage arrangement to be together. Their escape from Castle Leoch ended with Brian being forced to kill Ellen’s jilted fiancรฉ, Malcolm Grant, making them fugitives.
In the early 20th century, the story focused on Julia Moriston and Henry Beauchamp, Claire’s parents. To escape the dangerous Lord Lovat, they attempted to travel through time using the standing stones at Craigh na Dun. The season ended with the couple, along with their baby William, reaching the stones, but it was not revealed if their time-travel attempt was successful.
What to Expect in Season 2
Production on the second season is currently in progress in Scotland. The main cast, including Harriet Slater (Ellen), Jamie Roy (Brian), Hermione Corfield (Julia), and Jeremy Irvine (Henry), have all returned.
The new season will explore the consequences of the characters’ actions from the first season. For Ellen and Brian, this means living as fugitives while the political landscape heats up. The finale showed the fiery crosses being lit, signaling the start of the first Jacobite Rising, which will force Brian to make a difficult choice.
Jamie Roy teased, “The fiery crosses are lit, and itโs given them an ultimatum, a crossroads. They think theyโre safe but does Brian go and do the right thing, which is report back to his Laird for warโฆ or does he choose to stay with Ellen and they run away?”
For Julia and Henry, the immediate drama involves their fate at the stones. Series author Diana Gabaldon hinted that the resolution for Henry will be particularly dramatic, describing what happens to his character at the start of the new season as “very dramatic and heart-wrenching.”
The cast has promised that the scale of the show is increasing. Jeremy Irvine, who plays Henry, mentioned that the production values have gone up and that the new season contains “wild, wild stuff.” He added, “This season, itโs gone up a levelโฆ I think itโs going to be very exciting.”
Fans can also expect to see more familiar faces from the Outlander universe. The first season introduced younger versions of characters like Murtagh, Dougal, and Colum. While no new characters have been officially confirmed, the actors have hinted at more surprises. Jamie Roy teased the appearance of a character that will make fans “lose their minds,” leading to speculation about the introduction of a young Jamie or Jenny Fraser.
Production Details and Release Window
The series is filmed at Wardpark Film and Television Studios in Cumbernauld, Scotland, the same location used for the original Outlander series. Filming for the second season began in the late summer of 2025.
While an exact release date has not been announced, estimates based on the production schedule suggest that Season 2 will likely arrive in late 2026 or early 2027. This timeline follows the pattern set by the first season, which wrapped filming in July 2024 and premiered in August 2025.
The show will also adjust its story following the passing of actor Brian McCardie, who played Isaac Grant. The production has confirmed it will not recast the role but will instead pay tribute to the actor within the narrative.
