The hit Outlander prequel, Blood of My Blood, concluded its first season with a heart-pounding cliffhanger, leaving fans desperate to know the fate of Julia and Henry Beauchamp. As production on Season 2 is already underway, one of the stars has revealed a significant secret that will threaten the couple’s relationship when the show returns.
The prequel series explores the parallel love stories of the parents of the original show’s heroes, Claire and Jamie Fraser. While Jamie’s parents, Ellen MacKenzie and Brian Fraser, face forbidden love in 18th-century Scotland, Claire’s parents, Julia Moriston and Henry Beauchamp, begin their romance during World War I before finding themselves thrown back in time to the 1700s.
The Season 1 Cliffhanger
The first season finale ended with Julia, Henry, and their newborn son William at the magical standing stones of Craigh Na Dun, attempting to return to their own time. However, they were met with a terrible realization. Like other time travelers in the Outlander universe, they could not be certain their son had inherited the ability to travel through the stones.
Faced with the risk of William being left alone in the past if the travel failed, Julia made the sacrifice to stay behind while Henry took the baby to safety. In the final moments, as their pursuers closed in, Henry grabbed Julia’s hand and the three of them reached for the stones together, leaving their ultimate fate a mystery.
The actors, Hermione Corfield and Jeremy Irvine, filmed multiple versions of the ending. Irvine shared that the creative team was weighing different options for where the story could go in Season 2, ultimately choosing the version that best set up the next part of the story.
A Secret Threatens Their Future
While the time-travel dilemma is a major obstacle, actor Jeremy Irvine, who plays Henry, has revealed an even more personal conflict that will drive a wedge between the couple in the new season. He teased that Henry is hiding a terrible mistake from Julia.
In the first season, Henry, suffering from severe trauma and believing Julia and his child had died, spent a night with a sex worker named Seema while in a distraught and hallucinatory state. He has not yet confessed this betrayal to his wife.
โHeโs also done some things while mentally not well that he needs to explain to Julia,โ Irvine stated. โThatโs the season 2 thing. Thatโs going to be fun for him.โ
Irvine elaborated on Henry’s fragile mental state, explaining that the character was in a deep crisis when the incident occurred. โWhat he really needs is mental health rehab,โ he said. โHis therapy is Julia. And he hasnโt had that person. So if he can just get her back, then hopefully he can get his head together.โ
This secret will undoubtedly devastate Julia and test the foundation of their relationship, adding another layer of drama to their fight for survival in the past.
Production on Season 2 is Well Underway
Fans eager for the next chapter will not have to wait too long. Starz officially renewed Blood of My Blood for a second season before the first one even premiered. The cast and crew are already deep into production, filming on location in Scotland.
Hermione Corfield, who plays Julia, confirmed they are far along in shooting, adding to the anticipation for what is to come. โWe’re now filming episode seven of season two, and I could not tell you what is about to happen to Julia. I’ve got no idea myself,โ Corfield shared, hinting at unexpected plot developments.
Jeremy Irvine also promised an exciting new season, praising the work of the writers. โFor season 2, the writers have really upped the game. We’ve got even better scripts this season,โ he said.
While a specific release date for Season 2 has not been announced, with production moving quickly, fans can expect more news in the coming months. The next season will also continue the story of Jamie’s parents, Ellen and Brian, whose own cliffhanger saw them facing a new threat as fiery crosses lit up the Scottish hills, signaling a call to arms for the Jacobite rebellion.
