A Playful Set Environment

Jennifer Holland shared that the Peacemaker Season 2 set was unlike a typical production. She said it often felt more like a playground than a movie set. The cast and crew were constantly laughing, even when dealing with the show’s darker storylines or complex action sequences.

Holland explained that this light-hearted energy created a space where actors could take risks and discover new aspects of their roles. She credited creator James Gunn with encouraging this freedom, often keeping unexpected improvisations in the final show.

โ€œIt was a joyous experience. I had such a great timeโ€ฆ.We had an absolutely incredible time. All the extra actors were having a great time. It seemed like everyone was really enjoying it,โ€ Holland told Collider.

This positive environment helped the team smoothly blend the show’s serious drama with its signature dark humor.

Memorable Moments and Challenging Scenes

One of Holland’s favorite moments to film was a scene where John Cena’s character, Chris Smith, badly sings to her character in a Big Belly Burger restaurant. Despite Cena possibly not enjoying the repeated takes, Holland said the experience was joyous for everyone on set.

The season also required Holland to perform demanding action sequences. One pivotal scene in the seventh episode required her character to fight Nazis from the alternate dimension Earth-X. Holland found this particular sequence especially memorable for an unusual reason.

โ€œIt was so fun, because I got to throw a ‘Mein Kampf’ at a Naziโ€™s face. It was pretty amazing,โ€ Holland told Variety.

Another highlight for the entire cast was filming a concert sequence with the band Nelson on a boat in Savannah, Georgia. Despite the cold late-fall weather, Holland described both nights of shooting as magical, with the real-life band performing for the cast and crew.

Harcourt’s Emotional Journey

While the behind-the-scenes atmosphere was fun, Holland’s character went through a deeply emotional journey in Season 2. Harcourt struggled with her feelings for Peacemaker while also confronting a version of herself from an alternate universe.

Holland explained that exploring a different version of her character was a fascinating challenge. She worked to ensure the alternate Harcourt felt grounded and real, not just a comical opposite. This other Emilia was softer and more open, shaped by a less traumatic upbringing.

A key emotional moment occurs in the finale when Harcourt finally admits to Chris that their kiss “meant everything.” Holland noted that this confession, delivered with Harcourt’s characteristic tough exterior, was exactly as written in the script and perfectly captured her character’s difficulty with vulnerability.

Looking Toward an Uncertain Future

The Season 2 finale ended on a dramatic cliffhanger. After Harcourt and Chris finally reconcile, he is kidnapped by Rick Flag Sr. and thrown into the prison planet known as Salvation. The newly formed team, Checkmate, is left unaware of his fate.

Holland admitted that filming the happy scenes of the team setting up Checkmate had a bittersweet feeling for her. She expressed concern that without knowing Chris has been taken, Harcourt might believe he abandoned her again, causing her to close off emotionally once more.

The actress has been open about her deep connection to the role, stating she would be happy to play Emilia Harcourt for the rest of her career. While the future of these characters in the DC Universe is not yet officially confirmed, the foundation is laid for their next move, likely involving a mission to rescue Peacemaker from Salvation.
