The new season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians starts with a crisis. Percy Jackson, Annabeth Chase, and their friends must act fast to save their home and a missing friend. The magical barrier protecting Camp Half-Blood is failing, and the only hope is a dangerous, unauthorized mission.

The first two episodes of Season 2, which premiered on December 10, 2025, on Disney+, set this urgent story in motion. Percy and Annabeth discover their satyr friend Grover is in terrible danger and the camp’s protective tree has been poisoned. With the camp’s new leadership refusing to help, the young demigods decide to break the rules to start their own quest.

A Camp in Crisis and a Friend in Trouble

Season 2 opens with trouble for Grover. While on a personal quest to find the god Pan, he is chased by followers of the traitorous Luke Castellan and then captured by a monstrous tentacle that drags him into the sea. This event is shown through a nightmare shared by Percy, who wakes up knowing his friend is in grave danger.

Meanwhile, Annabeth arrives at Percy’s home in New York City with her own bad dream. She saw a vision of Camp Half-Blood under attack. To get back to camp quickly, Percy, Annabeth, and Percy’s new cyclops companion, Tyson, take a taxi driven by the three Gray Sisters. During the wild ride, the sisters give Percy a mysterious string of numbers, which he later understands are geographic coordinates.

Their return to camp is anything but peaceful. They are immediately attacked by fireball-throwing Laestrygonians, or cannibal giants. Annabeth realizes this attack was just a distraction. The real target was Thalia’s tree, the magical source of the camp’s protective barrier. They arrive just in time to see Luke, flying away on a black pegasus, after he has stabbed the tree with a poisoned knife.

Walker Scobell once again shines as Percy, imbuing the principal character with a sense of quiet determination occasionally painted by intense vulnerability.

The camp itself has changed. The beloved activities director, Chiron, has been fired by Zeus. He has been replaced by Tantalus, a selfish and neglectful figure from Greek mythology who is more interested in planning a chariot race than addressing the camp’s critical security problem.

New Allies and Family Secrets

A major new character is introduced in these episodes: Tyson, played by Daniel Diemer. In the show, Percy’s mother, Sally Jackson, found Tyson and brought him to live with them. While the rest of the world sees him as a homeless boy, Percy and his mother can see his true formโ€”a young, kind-hearted cyclops with one large, expressive eye.

Tyson’s true identity becomes a pivotal moment. When Tantalus orders the cyclops to be killed for being a “monster,” a glowing trident symbol appears above Tyson’s head. This is the sign that Poseidon has claimed him as his son, revealing Tyson is Percy’s half-brother. The god Dionysus finds the situation hilariously typical of Poseidon.

Percy struggles with this sudden family expansion. He feels awkward about having a cyclops for a brother and is unsure how to act. However, Tyson’s loyalty and useful abilities, like being impervious to fire, quickly prove his value as both a friend and an ally.

The Plan for the Golden Fleece

Forbidden from leaving his cabin by Tantalus, Percy has another dream connected to Grover. The two friends share an “empathy link” that lets them communicate. Grover explains he is trapped in a cave by the cyclops Polyphemus, who is using the Golden Fleece as bait.

Grover tells Percy that the Golden Fleece is on the island and it has the power to heal anything.

This gives Percy the idea he needs. If the fleece can heal anything, it could also heal Thalia’s poisoned tree and restore Camp Half-Blood’s defenses. Grover also manages to tell Percy his location, repeating the same numbers from the Gray Sisters: coordinates pointing to the Sea of Monsters. Percy tells Annabeth he knows how to save the camp, setting their goal.

Sabotage, Betrayal, and a Secret Warning

In Episode 2, “Demon Pigeons Attack,” Percy and Annabeth try to get official permission for their quest. They need to win the camp’s upcoming chariot race, as the victor is traditionally granted a reward. Annabeth secretly contacts the exiled Chiron via an Iris Message for guidance.

Chiron gives Annabeth a critical and secret warning: she must get the fleece, but Percy cannot go on the quest. He reveals that the poisoning of the tree is a trap set by the titan Kronos, who specifically wants Percy to chase the fleece because of his role in a “Great Prophecy”. To keep Percy safe, Chiron instructs Annabeth to stop him from winning the chariot race.

This leads to a painful moment of perceived betrayal. During the chaotic race, which is interrupted by an attack from metal-feathered Stymphalian Birds, Annabeth sabotages Percy’s chariot. The race is canceled, and Tantalus names Clarisse the winner for not stopping. Clarisse is given the official quest and chooses Annabeth and another camper, Chris Rodriguez, deliberately leaving Percy out after Annabeth whispers advice in her ear.

Launching an Unsanctioned Quest

Feeling hurt and desperate to save Grover, Percy decides to go on the quest anyway, even though it means defying the camp’s leaders and breaking ancient rules. He goes to the beach and asks his father, Poseidon, not for permission, but for a sign that he won’t be stopped.

The messenger god Hermes, played by Lin-Manuel Miranda, appears instead. He gives Percy approval for the quest, along with a boat and a bag of helpful items. Hermes also reveals a personal stake in the journey, asking Percy to try and save his son, Luke, hinting at a father’s hope for redemption.

As Percy, Tyson, and a last-minute joining Annabeth prepare to leave, Tantalus arrives to punish them. Tyson tackles the camp director, allowing the trio to escape onto their boat. They sail away from Camp Half-Blood, knowing their unsanctioned actions mean they can likely never return. Their mission is now clear: sail into the dangerous Sea of Monsters, find the Golden Fleece, rescue Grover, and somehow avoid the trap Kronos has set for Percy.
