The upcoming sci-fi adventure Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling, is generating massive buzz ahead of its theatrical release. With a near-perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes and early reviews praising its blend of science, humor, and heart, the film is shaping up to be one of 2026’s biggest cinematic events. But one of the most talked-about moments in the movie almost didn’t happen at all.

Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller recently sat down for an extensive interview where they revealed how an unscripted moment involving Oscar-nominated actress Sandra Hüller and a Harry Styles song became the “heart of the movie.” The filmmakers also shared details about deleted scenes, the film’s runtime, and updates on their other projects like Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.

The Harry Styles Karaoke Scene That Changed Everything

In the interview with Collider, Lord and Miller explained that a key emotional sequence featuring Hüller singing karaoke was completely improvised. The scene was not in Drew Goddard’s original script. It came together because Gosling discovered something about his co-star during filming.

Phil Lord explained how the moment unfolded. The scene was meant to show Gosling’s character, Ryland Grace, feeling alienated from the camaraderie of other astronauts and scientists. Hüller’s character, Eva Stratt, the tough and no-nonsense head of the project, connects with him over that shared feeling of being outsiders.

According to Lord, Gosling came to them and said, “She can sing amazingly.” The directors already knew Hüller had a beautiful voice because she would sing between setups. They decided to take advantage of that talent.

“She comes down there and shows him that, like, ‘You may think I am cold, remote, tough, but I have a soul and a heart, and I love all of these people, and I love you, and I believe in you, and I just want to find a way to express that.’ Then at the end, she goes, ‘That’s enough.’ She shuts it back down because she’s got a tough job,” Lord said.

Christopher Miller added more context to the spontaneous moment. They only had a couple of days left filming on the ship set. When they approached Hüller about doing an unscripted karaoke scene, she agreed on one condition: she got to pick the song.

Hüller chose Harry Styles’ emotional ballad “Sign of the Times.” Miller recalled what happened when she performed.

“She picked this Harry Styles song, and she comes in and sings it, and everybody on the set was gobsmacked,” Miller said. “Because it was so perfectly appropriate for the message that she was giving to everybody, and everyone was absolutely floored. We were like, ‘Well, that’s going to be the heart of the movie.’”

Hüller learned about the karaoke scene only a day before filming. She even checked with her daughter to make sure the song choice was “actually cool” before agreeing to perform. The team quickly secured the rights to the track, and what resulted became one of the film’s most memorable sequences.

A Massive Sci-Fi Epic With a 156-Minute Runtime

Project Hail Mary is based on Andy Weir’s bestselling novel, the same author who wrote The Martian. The film follows Ryan Gosling as Ryland Grace, a middle school science teacher who wakes up alone on a spaceship light-years from Earth with no memory of how he got there. He slowly pieces together that he is on a desperate mission to save humanity from an extinction-level event caused by the sun dying.

The film runs 156 minutes, which is two hours and 36 minutes. Despite the lengthy runtime, early reviews suggest the movie moves at a brisk pace. Critics have noted that Project Hail Mary might blow past a two-hour runtime and yet there are rarely any dull moments.

Lord and Miller addressed the runtime in their interview. They explained that they never set out to hit a specific target length. Instead, they focused on telling the story correctly.

“It was just about making it feel like it was the right length. But we did know that the story had an epic scale to it. As intimate as it is, we wanted it to feel epic,” Lord said.

Miller added that they always kept the audience’s experience in mind. They wanted viewers to stay engaged from start to finish without feeling like the movie overstayed its welcome.

Deleted Scenes and Extended Cuts Coming to Home Release

Fans wondering if there will be a longer director’s cut of the film may be disappointed, but there is good news for those who want to see more. Lord and Miller confirmed that while the theatrical version is the definitive cut, there are plenty of deleted scenes that will be released eventually.

Miller explained their philosophy on editing. They had an initial assembly cut that was much longer than the final version. Watching it with test audiences helped them identify where the movie dragged.

“You can’t imagine it being shorter than three hours, and then you watch it with an audience, and you go, ‘Oh, I can hear them shifting.’ I saw three people go to the bathroom. They don’t want to be here right now. We have to cut big on this thing,” Lord admitted.

When asked directly if a longer cut exists for Blu-ray, Miller clarified: “This is the best version.” Lord added, “There are extended cuts, but I wouldn’t call them a ‘director’s cut,’ if that makes sense.” However, they promised that fans will eventually get to see the deleted material. “We have a lot of those for you,” Lord said.

Near-Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score and Critical Praise

Project Hail Mary currently holds a 96% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes based on over 100 reviews. Critics have called it one of the best-reviewed movies of Gosling’s career. The film blends the scientific problem-solving of The Martian with the heart of E.T. and the humor audiences expect from Lord and Miller.

Critics have described the film as The Martian meets Half Nelson meets E.T. Fans of the book have been assured that their anxieties are misplaced, with the adaptation being called funny, strange, heartening, and completely satisfying.

Gosling’s performance has drawn particular praise, with reviewers noting he hasn’t been this perfectly cast between roguish and ingenuous since La La Land in 2016.

Ryan Gosling Leads a Stellar Cast

Besides Gosling and Hüller, the film features an impressive ensemble. Lionel Boyce from The Bear plays Officer Steve Hatch. Ken Leung and Milana Vayntrub portray fellow crew members Yáo Li-Jie and Olesya Ilyukhina. James Ortiz voices and performs the alien character Rocky through puppetry, with visual effects enhancements. Priya Kansara voices the Hail Mary ship’s computer, Mary.

The production values are top-tier, with Dune cinematographer Greig Fraser handling the visuals. Daniel Pemberton, who scored Lord and Miller’s Spider-Verse films, composed the music.

Release Dates for USA, UK, Canada, Australia, India and Global Markets

Project Hail Mary opens in theaters and IMAX on March 20, 2026 in the United States, Canada, Australia, and most international markets. Viewers in the United Kingdom can also catch the film starting March 20, 2026.

However, audiences in India will have to wait a little longer. The film will release in Indian theaters on March 26, 2026. The decision was made to avoid competition with local big-ticket releases. The film will screen in Indian theaters in English, Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu across IMAX and other premium large formats.

Amazon MGM Studios handles the domestic release in the US and Canada, while Sony Pictures Releasing International manages distribution everywhere else.

Lord and Miller Update Spider-Verse and Spider-Noir Projects

During the same interview, the filmmaking duo also provided updates on their animation projects. Regarding Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, Lord confirmed they are “in the middle” of production. The story is coming together well with new cast members and cinematographer Alice Brooks. They confirmed this installment will be “the last of this trilogy.”

They also discussed the upcoming Spider-Noir live-action series starring Nicolas Cage. Miller described the show as “a delight.” Lord revealed Cage’s unique approach to the character.

“He had this great idea, which was, ‘I want to play this like a spider pretending to be a person.’ So he sometimes goes to the movies, his character, and practices and studies what the actors are doing so he can use it in his real life,” Lord shared.

The series was shot natively in black and white, with a special color version called “true hue” also available, allowing viewers to watch it two different ways.

What Audiences Can Expect

Project Hail Mary promises to deliver the kind of grand-scale, optimistic sci-fi adventure that has been missing from theaters. With Lord and Miller’s signature blend of humor and heart, Gosling’s committed performance, and Hüller’s unforgettable musical moment, the film is poised to be a crowd-pleaser.

The movie opens in most countries on March 20 and in India on March 26. It will be available in IMAX with nearly two hours of footage presented in the expanded 1.43:1 aspect ratio, filling the entire screen.
