The ABC drama RJ Decker wrapped up its first season on April 28, 2026, with a finale titled “Even Walls Fall Down.” The episode solved multiple murder cases but ended with a death nobody saw coming.

The one-hour finale aired at 9:00 PM ET/PT on ABC and is available for streaming the next day on Hulu. Scott Speedman stars as RJ Decker, a former photographer turned private investigator trying to clear his name after serving two years in prison for a crime he didn’t fully understand.

Why Lucas Tried to Steal RJ’s Camera

The season started with RJ going to prison for beating up Lucas Ochoa (Maximo Salas), who tried to steal his camera. The finale finally reveals the real reason.

Victor Ochoa (David Zayas), Lucas’ father and a wealthy politician, ordered his son to steal the camera. Victor feared that photos on RJ’s camera could tie him to a crime. It was never about money or a random street fight.

Emi Ochoa (Jaina Lee Ortiz), Victor’s daughter and RJ’s love interest, kept the SD card hidden all along. She eventually gives it to Lucas for safekeeping. RJ meets Lucas face to face to get the card back. Lucas admits what he did but refuses to apologize. He tells RJ that he saw “blood in his eyes” that night and believes jail saved RJ from doing something worse.

The Photos That Started Everything

The SD card contains photos from two cases RJ worked on as a photographer. One case involved a man named Peter Bellweather, who was murdered. The other case showed a crime scene where an architect named Jessica Laurent died. Her death was ruled a suicide.

When RJ and his team look closer at the photos, they spot Ray’s car. Ray is Victor’s trusted helper. His car being at Jessica’s death scene proves Victor helped cover up a murder.

Mel (Bevin Bru) and Catherine (Adelaide Clemens), RJ’s ex-wife and her wife, dig into old case files. Catherine brings in Steven Crane, Peter’s former business partner. Steven confesses to killing Peter. He had drug problems, and Peter gave him an ultimatum to get sober or lose their business partnership. Steven hired a killer and has felt guilty ever since.

The Real Killer Behind Jessica’s Death

The evidence points to Victor at first. But the truth is more complicated.

Bruce Vinkour (Stephen Bishop), a business associate of Victor, killed Jessica. She found a dangerous flaw in one of his building designs. Bruce wanted to build quickly, but Jessica planned to expose the flaw publicly. That would have ruined his reputation and business.

Bruce killed Jessica in a moment of anger. He called Victor to clean up the mess. Victor sent Ray to make Jessica’s death look like a suicide. Ray also stole Jessica’s work drive and gave it to Victor.

A Second Murder Changes Everything

Ray becomes the prime suspect in Jessica’s death. Before he can talk to police, someone kills him. Wish (Kevin Rankin), RJ’s former cellmate and close friend, follows Ray and sees a hooded figure enter Ray’s place. Wish hears gunshots and watches the figure run away. Ray dies but gives Wish a clue about a drive in Victor’s possession.

Emi and RJ break into Victor’s house to steal the drive. Emi distracts her father while RJ opens the safe. The password turns out to be Victor’s own birthday, as Catherine guessed.

The drive does not have evidence against Victor. Instead, it has building plans. One plan shows Bruce’s project with the flaw Jessica found. Another photo places Bruce’s car next to Ray’s car on the night Jessica died.

Bruce is the hooded figure who killed Ray. He panicked when police reopened Jessica’s case. Bruce injured himself climbing a fence, leaving his blood at Ray’s crime scene.

Bruce Confesses and Victor Walks Free

Emi and Mel confront Bruce with the evidence. They offer him a deal. If he gives up Victor, he will avoid the death penalty for killing Ray. Bruce agrees.

Victor gets arrested and put in a cell with RJ. But RJ has good news. Victor tried to send him back to prison by getting his parole officer replaced. After Victor’s arrest, RJ and Mel convinced the new officer to drop the charges.

RJ tells Victor he won. But Victor is not worried. He says the evidence against him is weak.

Hours later, Victor walks free. The case against him falls apart.

Victor’s Shocking Death in RJ Decker Finale

The finale’s final moments show Victor dead in his pool. Someone killed him at his own home.

Showrunner Robert Doherty told TV Insider that Victor was always meant to die in the ninth episode. He even thought twice after casting David Zayas.

“I will cop to having second thoughts after we cast David Zayas, who is just a remarkable person and actor. He was just so much fun to watch and interact with. In my book, he’s TV royalty. Ultimately, though, we had to say goodbye to Victor.” – Robert Doherty

Doherty would not reveal the killer. He said the murder investigation would be a major focus if the show gets a second season.

Victor admitted to Emi that he worked with dangerous people, possibly cartels. He claimed it was for “the good of the city.” Those connections may have caught up with him.

Emi will likely become a suspect since she helped take her father down. Doherty said Emi will carry guilt because her actions made Victor vulnerable to whoever killed him.

RJ and Emi leave their relationship unresolved. They agree to talk later and play foosball instead. Then the news of Victor’s death changes everything.
