The wait for more adventures in the god-tier game world has a clear end date. The official website for the Shangri-La Frontier anime announced that Season 3 will premiere in January 2027, giving fans a firm timeline for when they can return to the virtual world that has captured millions of viewers worldwide.
The announcement came alongside a fresh teaser visual that hints at the intense action to come. The image shows protagonist Rakuro Hizutome, known in-game as Sunraku, illuminated by light leaking from his signature pumpkin head gear, with three mysterious large figures watching in the background. The visual sets the tone for what promises to be an action-packed continuation of the story that ended with a major cliffhanger in March 2025.
Third Season Continues Right Where Season 2 Left Off
Season 2 of Shangri-La Frontier finished airing on March 30, 2025, with an ending that left viewers desperate for more. The final episodes placed the story right at the start of the Global Game Competition (GGC) arc, specifically the Galaxia Heroes: Chaos tournament. Season 3 will pick up directly from this point, showing the clash between the American team “STAR RAIN” and the Japanese team “Nitro Squad.”
The GGC arc shifts the setting temporarily away from the main game world of Shangri-La Frontier into a competitive tournament format. This arc has been highly anticipated by manga readers who describe it as an absolute highlight of the series. The tournament setting allows for a different style of storytelling, focusing on high-stakes player versus player battles rather than the monster-hunting adventures that defined earlier episodes.
Studio C2C, the animation studio behind the first two seasons, returns to handle production for the third season. The main creative team remains intact, with Toshiyuki Kubooka serving as executive director, Kazuyuki Fudeyasu handling series composition, and Ayumi Kurashima continuing as character designer.
Franchise Expands With First Video Game Release
Beyond the anime continuation, the Shangri-La Frontier franchise is making its first move into interactive entertainment. Netmarble Nexus is developing the series’ first game adaptation, titled Shangri-La Frontier: The Seven Colossi, scheduled for release in 2026. A teaser website and promotional video have already been released, giving fans a first look at what to expect from the mobile game.
This marks a natural expansion for a series built entirely around gaming culture. The original story follows Rakuro Hizutome, a high school student who calls himself a “trash-game hunter”—someone who takes pleasure in beating notoriously broken and poorly designed games. When he finally tries Shangri-La Frontier, a massively popular VR game with over 30 million players, he discovers the experience is anything but a disappointment.
Record-Breaking Source Material Continues to Grow
The anime draws from a successful manga adaptation of Katarina’s original web novel, which began serialization in Weekly Shonen Magazine in July 2020. The manga has achieved impressive commercial success, with over 16 million copies in circulation worldwide. It previously made history by sweeping four categories in reader surveys, demonstrating its strong connection with audiences.
Kodansha USA Publishing releases the English version of the manga, describing the story as follows:
“Second year high school student Rakurō Hizutome is interested in one thing only: finding ‘shitty games’ and beating the crap out of them. His gaming skills are second to none, and no game is too bad for him to enjoy. So when he’s introduced to the new VR game Shangri-La Frontier, he does what he does best—min-maxes and skips the prologue to jump straight into the action. But can even an expert gamer like Rakurō discover all the secrets that Shangri-La Frontier hides?”
