The final battle for Hawkins is here, and Eleven is stronger than ever. With the release of Stranger Things Season 5, new trailers and episodes confirm that Millie Bobby Brown’s character has gained significant new abilities, including the power of flight and massively upgraded telekinesis. These developments come just as another member of the Hawkins group, Will Byers, discovers his own shocking connection to the supernatural threat.
Eleven’s New Flying Ability Revealed
The newest teaser trailers for the final season show a major leap in Eleven’s powers, literally. A key clip reveals Eleven jumping an incredible distance to land on the roof of a school bus, an ability she has never displayed before. While she isn’t seen soaring through clouds, this controlled, powerful leap is described as a direct precursor to full flight.
This ability appears to be unique to Eleven. It is a power not seen in the other test subjects from Hawkins Lab or even in Vecna. The show’s co-creator, Matt Duffer, compared her refined control to a famous cinematic power, stating, “She has better control over her powers and can use them in more innovative ways. The closest example, Iโd say, is probably the Force.”.
This new skill pays off a visual cue from eight years ago. In the Season 2 finale, Eleven briefly levitated off the ground while using her powers to close the gate to the Upside Down. At that time, the levitation was an involuntary side effect of strain. Now, in Season 5, she has learned to command it.
A Full Power Upgrade for the Final Fight
Flight is not the only area where Eleven has grown. Trailers show her telekinetic abilities have increased to an enormous scale. She is seen generating a massive energy blast, suggesting her overall power has been boosted for the ultimate showdown. The narrative justifies this growth, as the character has had nearly two years to prepare for the final conflict since the events of Season 4.
However, the creators are careful to frame her power-up realistically within the story. Co-creator Ross Duffer clarified the extent of her new abilities by stating, “Sheโs not suddenly like Neo or Superman, flying through the sky, but sheโs definitely stronger now.”. This evolution follows her intense experience at the Nina Project in Season 4, where she regained her lost abilities and even discovered a new power to restart a heart.
Will Byers Discovers His Own Shocking Power
While Eleven’s powers grow, a stunning twist in Season 5, Volume 1 shifts the spotlight to Will Byers. In a climactic moment, with his friends about to be killed by Demogorgons, Will accesses a previously unknown ability. He is able to psychically connect to the creatures, see through their eyes, and then violently stop them, saving everyone.
This moment is punctuated by a familiar sign of psychic exertion: a nosebleed. The Duffer Brothers explain that Will’s power is fundamentally different from Eleven’s. He does not generate power himself but can channel and manipulate the hive mind of the Upside Down, which is linked to Vecna. Matt Duffer explained, “He taps into the hive mind, and then he can manipulate anything within the hiveโฆ So he canโt open a door, because the door is not part of the hive mind.”.
The creators revealed this was a long-planned character arc. Ross Duffer said, “Weโve been talking about Will having powers for as long as I can really remember.”. His power activation is tied to his emotional journey of self-acceptance and no longer seeing himself as weak, a point Vecna fatally underestimated.
The Return of a Forgotten Ally
The first volume of the final season also brings back a surprising character. Deep within the Upside Down, Eleven and Hopper discover that Eight, also known as Kali, is alive and being held captive. Played by Linnea Berthelsen, Kali was the focus of a Season 2 episode and has the power to create illusions.
Her return is a deliberate move by the writers to integrate her fully into the end of the story. Matt Duffer expressed that not bringing her back would make her initial episode seem like a mistake, and that she plays “a really important role moving forward” in Eleven’s journey.
The Final Episodes and Remaining Mysteries
Stranger Things Season 5 is being released in three parts. Volume 1, containing four episodes, is now streaming. Volume 2 with three episodes arrives on December 25, and the series finale launches on December 31.
Netflix and the creators have hinted at several key elements for the remaining episodes. These include the appearance of Barb’s body as part of Vecna’s hive, significant musical moments, and more exploration of Vecna’s backstory and his connection to the Mind Flayer. The link between Vecna and the Mind Flayer is a mystery promised to be answered in the final episode. The plot will also connect more deeply to the stage play Stranger Things: The First Shadow, especially in the finale.
