HBO is adding serious star power to the second season of its crime drama Task. The series, which became a hit for the network in fall 2025, will bring in two-time Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali to act alongside returning lead Mark Ruffalo. The news broke on March 22, 2026, confirming that production on the new season is moving forward.
Task comes from Brad Ingelsby, the writer behind Mare of Easttown. The first season followed FBI agent Tom Brandis, played by Ruffalo, as he led a special unit to catch robbers targeting drug houses in Philadelphia’s working-class suburbs. The show was so well-received that HBO renewed it just two months after it premiered, upgrading it from a limited series to an ongoing drama.
Mahershala Ali’s Role in the New Season
Mahershala Ali is set to play Eddie Barnes, a respected DEA agent working in Philadelphia. According to the official character details, Barnes’ team will find itself in conflict with Tom Brandis’ unit. This sets up a classic crime drama scenario where law enforcement officers working on the same side might end up as rivals.
For Ali, this marks a return to HBO seven years after his Emmy-nominated performance in the third season of True Detective. He is also known for his work in House of Cards and the comedy series Ramy.
Ali won his Oscars for Moonlight (2017) and Green Book (2019). His recent film credits include Jurassic World: Rebirth (2025) and the thriller Leave the World Behind.
What to Expect From Task Season 2
HBO has released an official logline for the upcoming episodes. The story will continue with Tom Brandis as he “takes the helm of a new task force, but the deeper the operation runs, the harder it is to tell who’s the target.” This suggests the new season will lean heavily into themes of trust and betrayal, similar to the first season.
Currently, Mark Ruffalo is the only actor confirmed to return from the first season. The original cast included Tom Pelphrey, Emilia Jones, Jamie McShane, Thuso Mbedu, and Fabien Frankel. However, because the first season ended with several characters either killed off or leaving the task force, some cast changes were expected.
The show remains in pre-production, so more casting announcements are likely in the coming weeks.
The Success of Season 1
The first season of Task arrived on HBO in September 2025 and quickly became a major success. The network reported that it ranked among its top three fastest-growing debut seasons. Critics also gave the show strong marks, with a 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 77 Metascore.
The show earned award nominations as well, including nods for Mark Ruffalo for Best Leading Actor in a TV series at both the Critics’ Choice and Golden Globe awards.
Brad Ingelsby, the creator and showrunner, spoke about the renewal in November 2025:
“We’ve been incredibly fortunate to have HBO’s unwavering support of Task from the very first script onwards, throughout production, and during their extraordinary launch of our first season to audiences. They are an unmatched creative home.”

Release and Streaming Information
HBO has not yet announced a premiere date for Task Season 2. Because the show is still in pre-production, filming likely will not begin until later in 2026. Historically, HBO dramas typically take about a year from the start of filming to airing.
For viewers outside the United States, Task streams on Max (formerly HBO Max) in most regions. In India, the series is available on JioHotstar.
Both Mark Ruffalo and Mahershala Ali have busy schedules outside of the show. Ruffalo is scheduled to appear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which opens on July 31, 2026. Ali voices a character in the animated film Wildwood, coming to theaters on October 23, 2026. Their commitments may affect the production timeline, but HBO has not indicated any delays.
