The wait for the next Batman movie just got more exciting. Andy Serkis is officially coming back to play Alfred Pennyworth in The Batman II. The sequel to the 2022 hit film starts shooting in June 2026 in London. Fans of the dark and gritty detective story can expect to see the loyal butler return alongside Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne.
There was some worry about whether Serkis could fit the movie into his busy schedule. He is also working on another huge project, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. That film is set to release on December 17, 2027. But the scheduling problem has been solved. Serkis will be in The Batman II. He won’t be there when filming starts in June. He told ScreenRant that he will join the production “by the end of the year”.
“I’m pretty certain it’s all going to work out. Yeah, we’re working on it, but I think it’s all looking good.”

How Andy Serkis Juggles Batman and The Lord of the Rings
Serkis is a very busy actor right now. He is not just acting in The Hunt for Gollum. He is also directing that movie. Many people thought he might have to pick one project over the other. But the teams behind both movies worked together to find a solution. They adjusted the shooting schedules so Serkis can do both.
The Batman II will finish filming while Serkis works on his Lord of the Rings duties. This is good news for fans of both series. The Batman II is scheduled to hit theaters on October 1, 2027. That is just two and a half months before The Hunt for Gollum comes out.
Robert Pattinson Praises the Script for The Batman II
The lead actor is very excited about the story. Robert Pattinson has read the script. He thinks it is something special. He told Filme Gitmeden Önce that the script is “crazy” good. He also said the first Batman movie was different from other superhero films. But this sequel is even more different.
“I think it’s going to be a really, really special movie and very, very different. It’s taking some big swings.”
— Robert Pattinson on The Batman II
Pattinson shared that the movie goes in a new direction. It takes risks that other Batman movies have not taken before. The actor started preparing for the role right after finishing press for his movie The Drama. Director Matt Reeves sent the script to Pattinson in a special privacy pouch. It had a code to open it. This was to keep all the secrets safe. Reeves said the things the script does for Bruce Wayne have “never been done before in this way”.
New Cast Members Joining The Batman II
The sequel is adding some big names to the cast. Scarlett Johansson has joined the movie in a secret role. There are rumors that she might play Gilda Dent. Sebastian Stan is also coming on board. He will play Harvey Dent. Harvey Dent is the district attorney who later becomes the villain Two-Face. Fans are excited to see how Stan handles this famous role.
Colin Farrell is returning as The Penguin. His performance in The Batman and the HBO series The Penguin won many awards. The Penguin series picked up nine Emmys. Jeffrey Wright is also expected to return as James Gordon.
Release Date and Production Delays
The movie was supposed to come out earlier. It was first set for October 2025. Then it moved to October 2026. Now it is set for October 1, 2027. The delays happened because the team wanted to get the script right. Director Matt Reeves said it took longer than he wanted. But he said the most important thing was to make the script the best it could be.
The first movie, The Batman, made over $772 million worldwide. It opened to $134 million in the United States. The film won Best Superhero Film at the Saturn Awards. Fans loved the dark and realistic take on Gotham City. Expectations are very high for the sequel.
