The end is near for Prime Video’s hit superhero show. Karl Urban, who plays Billy Butcher, opened up about the final season of The Boys and what fans can expect when the show returns next month. The actor shared new details about his character’s dark path and gave hints about the emotional series finale.

The fifth season will be the last chapter of this bloody and funny take on superheroes. Urban spoke with Hindustan Times about saying goodbye to the show after seven years. He admitted that finishing the series brings mixed feelings for him and the rest of the team.

“It’s bittersweet because we will miss each other and this phenomenal crew in Toronto,” Urban said. “But then there’s a great sense of pride that we can stand back and deliver this to the audience, finish this the way we want to and go out on top.”

Butcher’s Transformation Into Something Darker

The new season shows Billy Butcher changing in big ways. Urban explained that his character has turned himself into something dangerous to fight against Homelander. But he made sure to point out that Butcher is still very different from the show’s main villain.

“Yes, Butcher has turned himself into a monster in order to defeat the monster,” Urban explained. “But he still holds on to the vestiges of his humanity, and that’s why he has the Boys around, to keep him from really losing it. That’s the difference, primarily between him and Homelander.”

The actor pushed back against people who say Butcher has become just like Antony Starr’s character. He sees a clear line between the two men.

“Homelander really only thinks about himself, and Butcher is doing what he is, at least in his mind, for the benefit of humanity. He sees supes as an existential crisis, and he and the Boys are the only ones who can do something about it.”

Earlier this year, Urban gave another look at his character’s mindset. While talking to Rotten Tomatoes about his movie The Bluff, he called this version of Butcher a weapon with no brakes.

“Butcher this season is just a guided missile, and you better stay out of his way,” Urban said. “He’s the most powerful gnarly version of the character yet, but most powerful physically and most mentally the smartest version.”

What To Expect From The Final Episodes

The The Boys Season 5 release schedule is now set. Prime Video will put out the first two episodes on April 8, 2026. After that, new episodes will come out every Wednesday. The series will end with the finale on May 20, 2026.

The official story for the last season shows a world where Homelander has taken full control. The synopsis says he rules America through fear and sends people who disagree with him to places called Freedom Camps. Members of The Boys like Hughie (Jack Quaid), Mother’s Milk (Laz Alonso), and Frenchie (Tomer Capone) get locked up. Annie (Erin Moriarty) tries to fight back, and Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) is missing.

Then Butcher comes back with a virus that can kill all Supes. This sets up the final fight that will change everything.

Urban gave fans a small hint about how the show will end. He said people should get ready for a lot of action and some sad moments.

“The final season delivers payoff. The show is going to end with a ton of action, a few tears and some very strong, heartfelt moments,” he shared.

The Cast And Filming Challenges

The last season brings back many familiar faces. Along with Urban and Starr, the cast includes Jack Quaid, Erin Moriarty, Jessie T. Usher, Laz Alonso, Chace Crawford, Tomer Capone, Karen Fukuhara, Nathan Mitchell, Colby Minifie, Cameron Crovetti, Susan Heyward, Valorie Curry, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Jensen Ackles.

Filming the final season came with some problems. At Emerald City Comic Con 2026, Urban talked about how Jensen Ackles (Soldier Boy) was working on another show at the same time. This meant the team had to shoot episodes in a different order than planned.

“We had to shoot the final season of The Boys completely out of order because we were waiting for Jensen,” Urban said.

The Boys Season 5 will have eight episodes in total. The first two drop on April 8, followed by weekly releases on April 15, April 22, April 29, May 6, May 13, and the finale on May 20. The show is available on Prime Video in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, India, and worldwide.
