Production has officially begun for The Devil Wears Prada 2, the long-awaited sequel to the 2006 hit film. The original stars Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci are back, joined by Kenneth Branagh as Miranda Priestly’s husband. The movie is set to release on May 1, 2026.

Returning Cast and New Faces

The sequel brings back the core cast from the first movie. Meryl Streep reprises her role as Miranda Priestly, the fierce editor-in-chief of Runway magazine. Anne Hathaway returns as Andy Sachs, the former assistant who left the fashion world. Emily Blunt is back as Emily Charlton, now a top executive at a luxury brand. Stanley Tucci returns as Nigel Kipling, the art director.

New to the cast is Kenneth Branagh, who will play Miranda’s husband. In the original film, Miranda mentioned her troubled marriage, and this sequel will explore that relationship further.

“Why are Meryl and I so mean to each other in every movie we do?” Emily Blunt joked recently. “We always have beef with each other. I don’t know what it is. Let’s hope we remedy it. I’m not sure.”

Who Will Not Be Returning

Not everyone from the original film is coming back. Adrian Grenier, who played Andy’s boyfriend Nate, will not return for the sequel. In the first movie, Nate and Andy reconciled, with Andy suggesting she would move to Boston with him. His absence suggests the sequel may focus more on Andy’s career than her love life.

Plot Details: Miranda vs. Emily

The sequel’s story revolves around Miranda Priestly facing the decline of print media. Runway magazine is struggling, and Miranda must work with her former assistant Emily Charlton, now a powerful executive at a luxury advertising firm. Their rivalry takes center stage as they compete for influence in the changing fashion industry.

“I think that she is writing for a wonderful French women’s magazine,” Anne Hathaway said about Andy’s future in a 2022 interview. “I think she’s a staff writer and she speaks French fluently. I don’t think she’s married, but she might have a child or two. I think she’s pretty fab.”

Behind the Scenes

The original director David Frankel and screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna are returning for the sequel. The film is based on Lauren Weisberger’s 2013 book Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns. The first movie was a massive success, earning $326 million worldwide and earning Streep an Oscar nomination.

Filming is taking place in New York and Italy, just like the original. The announcement came with a teaser featuring the iconic red heels and famous quotes from the first film.

Why This Sequel Matters

The original The Devil Wears Prada became a cultural phenomenon, defining workplace comedies and fashion films. The sequel arrives at a time when the real-life fashion industry is changing—Anna Wintour, the inspiration for Miranda Priestly, recently stepped down as Vogue editor after 37 years.

Fans have waited nearly 20 years for this sequel, and with the original team back, expectations are high. The mix of old and new characters promises fresh drama while keeping what made the first film beloved.
