A Chinese workplace romance has taken over Netflix India’s charts and refuses to let go. The Early Spring, starring Jing Boran and Sun Qian, has stayed in the country’s Top 5 since its August 26, 2026 premiere. New shows arrive every week, yet this drama keeps holding its spot.
The series made history as the first Chinese drama to enter Netflix’s Global Top 3, debuting at No. 2 on the Global Non-English TV list with 2.4 million views and 21.5 million hours watched between August 24 and 30. It reached the Top 10 in 54 countries and topped daily charts in Singapore, Thailand, Japan, South Korea, and Brazil. In India, the show climbed as high as No. 2 and currently sits at No. 4.
What Makes This Show Different
On paper, The Early Spring sounds like a familiar story. Luan Nian (Jing Boran) plays a wealthy, successful, and arrogant creative director in Beijing’s advertising world. Shang Zhitao (Sun Qian) is a young professional who moves to the city and lands a job at his agency.
But the show does not stop at the usual boss-employee romance. The relationship stretches across six years, changing as both characters grow older and their careers develop. They struggle to put feelings into words, so their physical connection becomes their primary way of communicating.
“Their contrast and chemistry feel completely natural. They are not a conventional idol-drama couple and have a distinctive presence and emotional rhythm of their own.” – Director Chiang Chi-cheng
The series adapts the popular web novel Zao Chun Qing Lang by Gu Niang Bie Ku. Director Jiang Ji Zheng and writer Gao Xiao Xian brought the story to screen with a mature approach to romance.
Why Indian Viewers Can’t Stop Watching
Indian audiences have connected with The Early Spring for several reasons. The show arrived on Netflix with subtitles available from day one. For C-drama fans in India, this broke the old pattern of waiting for fan translations or searching across unofficial websites.
The characters feel real, not perfect. Luan Nian is hardly a model boyfriend. He is controlling, arrogant, and struggles to express emotions. Shang Zhitao deals with her own insecurities and does not always communicate well. Their flaws make the story believable.
“It is a messy, emotionally intense, and highly addictive exploration of flawed people trying to navigate love and ambition.” – Hindustan Times review
The show’s intimate scenes also sparked conversation. The production hired an intimacy coordinator, which remains rare for Chinese dramas. This helped create more natural and comfortable performances.
The Cast Behind the Craze
Jing Boran plays Luan Nian, also called Luke. He prepared extensively for the role, working out almost daily and bringing pieces from his own wardrobe to shape the character’s fashion-forward image. Producer Gao Xiao-xian praised his dedication.
Sun Qian portrays Shang Zhitao, known as Flora in the office. She connected personally with the role, sharing that like her character, she moved from Harbin to Beijing to chase her career.
“Like Flora, I’m from Harbin and moved to Beijing to pursue my career. Her story spans ten years, and this is also my tenth year in the industry. I felt deeply connected to her journey.” – Sun Qian
The supporting cast includes Liu Xiao Bei, Qi Tian Qing, Zhang Ye Zi, Ning Xin, Zhao Zhen Yu, and Zhang You.
