Fox’s new event series The Faithful: Women of the Bible brings the Book of Genesis to the small screen with a focus on the women who helped shape three major world religions. The three-week show, which premiered March 22, 2026, features a mix of well-known Hollywood actors and rising stars. The final episode airs on Easter Sunday, April 5, 2026.
The series was filmed on location in Rome and Matera, Italy, and each episode becomes available to stream on Hulu the day after it airs on Fox.
The Five Women at the Center of the Story
The show follows five women from the Old Testament whose stories are connected across generations. Each episode looks at their lives, struggles, and the difficult choices they made.
Minnie Driver as Sarah
Minnie Driver plays Sarah, the wife of Abraham. Sarah’s story centers on her deep desire for a child and her struggle to trust God’s promise after decades of waiting. Driver, known for her Oscar-nominated role in “Good Will Hunting” and her work in “The Riches,” brings emotional weight to a woman who makes a complicated decision involving her servant Hagar that changes her family forever.
In the series, Sarah and her husband Abraham leave their home after Abraham says God told him to go to a new land. Sarah follows him even though she questions what is happening. The show explores her pain over not having children and what happens when she tries to take control of the situation.
Natacha Karam as Hagar
Natacha Karam plays Hagar, Sarah’s Egyptian servant. Karam, who appeared in “9-1-1: Lone Star” and “The Brave,” plays a woman caught between her mistress and the man who fathers her child. Hagar’s story shows a woman who finds hope even when she feels abandoned.
The relationship between Sarah and Hagar changes throughout the series, moving between friendship, jealousy, and a difficult bond that neither woman can fully escape.
Alexa Davalos as Rebekah
Alexa Davalos plays Rebekah, Sarah’s great-niece. Davalos, known for her roles in “The Man in the High Castle” and “Clash of the Titans,” portrays a mother who plays favorites among her twin sons, Isaac’s children Jacob and Esau. Her actions set off a rivalry between brothers that lasts for generations.
Rebekah’s story shows a woman who tries to control her family’s future but faces the consequences of her choices.
Millie Brady as Leah and Blu Hunt as Rachel
Millie Brady plays Leah and Blu Hunt plays Rachel, two sisters who become rivals in love. Brady appeared in “The Last Kingdom” and “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.” Hunt, known for her work in “The New Mutants” and “The Originals,” plays Rachel, the younger sister who wins the heart of Jacob.
The sisters’ story deals with love, jealousy, and what happens when two women love the same man. Leah ends up married to Jacob first through a trick, while Rachel becomes the wife he truly wanted. Their relationship changes from close sisters to competitors.
The Men Who Surround Them
Jeffrey Donovan as Abraham
Jeffrey Donovan, known for “Burn Notice” and “Law & Order,” plays Abraham, Sarah’s husband. Abraham hears God’s voice telling him to leave everything he knows and go to a new land. The show presents Abraham as a man of strong faith who believes completely in God’s promises, even when those promises seem impossible.
Tom Payne and Tom Mison in Key Roles
Tom Payne, who starred in “The Walking Dead” and “Prodigal Son,” appears in the series. Tom Mison, known for “Sleepy Hollow,” also joins the cast. Both actors play important figures in the biblical stories that connect to the five women.
The Creative Team Behind the Show
The series comes from executive producer Carol Mendelsohn, who created the “CSI” franchise. Mendelsohn worked alongside Julie Weitz and Rene Echevarria, who wrote the pilot and serves as showrunner. Echevarria has a long history in television, with credits including “Star Trek,” “Carnival Row,” and “The 4400.”
Echevarria, a Catholic, said he prayed for an opportunity to tell faith-based stories. When Mendelsohn approached him about a project focusing on women of the Bible, he said yes immediately.
“As I went off to write the first draft, she said, ‘René, write them like they don’t know they’re Bible characters,’” Echevarria recalled. “That became a thing. We said to the other writers and even to the actors, to play this like you don’t know you’re a Bible character.”
What Critics Are Saying
The first episodes focus on Sarah and Abraham’s journey. Some critics noted that the show sticks closely to the biblical text but sometimes rushes through emotional moments. The Hollywood Reporter pointed out that Minnie Driver does strong work showing Sarah’s mixed feelings about her situation, though the show does not always give her enough time to explore those emotions fully.
The series aims to make these ancient figures feel like real people with real problems. Echevarria, who dealt with infertility with his wife, said he connected personally to Sarah’s story of waiting for a child.
“These are flawed women, and they make mistakes — at times they’re quite noble and heroic, at times they stumble,” Echevarria said. “But God makes good of all of it.”
