Jennifer Garner returns as Hannah Hall in the second season of Apple TV+‘s thriller series The Last Thing He Told Me, which premiered on February 20, 2026. The first episode, titled “Cape Cod,” picks up the story five years after Owen Michaels disappeared, leaving behind only a note telling Hannah to “protect her.” The new season brings back Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Owen and Angourie Rice as Bailey, while introducing Judy Greer as Quinn Campano and expanding the story based on Laura Dave’s sequel novel The First Time I Saw Him.
The Season 2 premiere answers some questions while raising new ones, particularly about Owen’s fate and whether he is actually alive. Here is everything that happens in the first episode and what it means for Hannah and Bailey going forward.
Is Owen Alive in The Last Thing He Told Me Season 2?
Yes, Owen Michaels is alive. The Season 2 premiere confirms that Owen has been living in hiding for the past five years, working undercover in Houston. He resides in a trailer park and works at the docks under a false identity, secretly photographing Teddy Campano (Luke Kirby) and monitoring shipments connected to a shipping company called Rafina. Owen is gathering evidence to build a case against the Campano crime family, hoping to finally end their threat for good .
Owen is not working alone. He has partnered with US Marshal Grady Bradford, sharing the photos and information he collects. Together, they aim to establish a connection between the Campanos and Rafina that would allow law enforcement to take down the entire operation . Owen believes that if he can provide enough evidence, he can finally reunite with Hannah and Bailey without fear of the Campanos coming after them.
However, Owen’s secret surveillance does not go unnoticed. Security cameras capture him photographing Teddy Campano at the docks. When Teddy learns that someone infiltrated their security system, he becomes curious about who managed to bypass their precautions and starts making plans to deal with the situation himself . This puts Owen in immediate danger and, by extension, threatens Hannah and Bailey as well.
How Does Owen Contact Hannah?
During a brief encounter at Hannah’s art exhibition, Owen secretly slips a small pendant into her pocket. The pendant contains pictures of Hannah and Bailey. Later, after Hannah receives an anonymous text warning her to leave the house and mentioning “Cape Cod,” she realizes the message came from Owen. She remembers a road trip she took with Owen years ago when they stayed at Cape Cod Inn after he became sick, and he wanted to return home to be with Bailey .
Hannah follows what she believes is Owen’s clue and drives to Cape Cod Inn with Bailey. There, she shares the story of that trip with her stepdaughter, explaining that Owen always wanted to come home for Bailey. Their conversation gets interrupted by a phone call from Charlie, who delivers devastating news: Nicholas Bell passed away from a heart attack .
Why Does Hannah Leave Nicholas Bell’s Birthday Party?
Early in the episode, Hannah and Bailey attend Nicholas Bell’s birthday party. Nicholas is Bailey’s maternal grandfather, and over the past five years, Bailey has grown close to him and her uncle Charlie. The family celebration seems normal until Hannah spots Frank Campano among the guests .
Upset that Nicholas did not warn her about Frank’s presence, Hannah quickly takes Bailey and leaves the party. Nicholas follows them and explains that he did not invite FrankโFrank simply showed up because he is one of Nicholas’s oldest friends. Nicholas reminds Hannah of the deal he made with Frank years ago to keep her and Bailey safe. While Hannah appreciates Nicholas’s protection, she refuses to be anywhere near Frank Campano .
What Happens with Bailey and Quinn Campano?
At Nicholas’s party, Bailey receives photographs of her late mother Katherine from Charlie. Many of the photos include Katherine’s longtime best friend, Quinn Campano, who is Frank Campano’s daughter and Teddy’s sister. Quinn pursued a career in law and now goes by the name Quinn Favreau, distancing herself from her family’s criminal activities .
Bailey becomes curious about her mother and wants to learn more. Despite Hannah’s initial refusal, Bailey secretly visits Quinn. During their meeting, Quinn shares stories about Katherine, revealing that although Katherine attended law school, she also had a passion for the arts. The conversation helps Bailey understand her mother better .
Bailey later tells Hannah about visiting Quinn. Hannah considers telling Bailey about seeing Owen but decides against it when she sees how eager Bailey is to move forward with her life and let go of the past .
How Does the Danger Return to Hannah and Bailey?
Despite five years of relative safety, Hannah has remained paranoid. She installed security systems at home, took self-defense classes, and prepared emergency plans including a hidden vehicle and cash reserves. Her preparation proves necessary when a stranger approaches her house pretending to check a gas leak .
The man attacks Hannah and tries to force her into his car. Hannah fights back using a secret blade she carries, stabs her attacker, and escapes. She immediately activates her emergency plan, retrieves Bailey from her theater studio, and they switch vehicles to evade their pursuers. They plan to hide in hotels along the way, paying with cash to avoid leaving a trail .
Bailey questions why they are being chased after five years of peace. Hannah shows her the pendant Owen left and explains that she recently saw him. Neither understands the pendant’s full significance, but Hannah believes Owen wants them to go to Cape Cod .
Why Does Nicholas Bell’s Death Change Everything?
Nicholas Bell’s death fundamentally alters the situation for Hannah and Bailey. For five years, Nicholas used his power and influence to keep the Campanos at bay, honoring the agreement he made with Hannah in Season 1. The Campanos respected that arrangement because of Nicholas .
With Nicholas gone, that protection disappears. Charlie calls Hannah at Cape Cod Inn to inform her that Nicholas suffered another heart attack and did not survive. His death means the Campanos no longer have any reason to hold back. The attack on Hannah happening the same night as Nicholas’s death raises questions about timing, though the episode does not confirm whether Nicholas was murdered .
Who Appears at Cape Cod Inn?
The episode ends with a surprise arrival. After Hannah receives the news about Nicholas’s death, Grady Bradford walks into the restaurant where Hannah and Bailey are hiding. Hannah looks visibly shocked to see him .
Grady previously warned Owen not to contact Hannah, insisting that staying away from his family was the only way to keep them safe. His sudden appearance at Cape Cod Inn raises many questions. Is he working with Owen? Is he tracking Hannah on his own? Does his presence mean federal involvement in the Campano case is escalating? .
The episode does not provide answers, leaving viewers to wait for Episode 2.
