The Story of Ana and Óscar
The New Years focuses on two characters from Madrid, Ana and Óscar. They meet for the first time on the night they both celebrate their 30th birthdays, which happens to be New Year’s Eve.
Their lives are very different at that moment. Ana lives in a shared apartment, does not like her job, and goes through friends quickly. Óscar is a doctor with a stable career and a close circle of friends. Despite their differences, they feel a strong connection.
“10 consecutive years, with each episode capturing a single night that reveals how love evolves, the series is an honest examination of modern commitment and choosing someone, year after year,” reads the official description.
The entire series is built around their annual meetings. Each of the ten episodes shows the pair on a different New Year’s Eve, offering a snapshot of how their lives and relationship change over time. The story explores if the very qualities that attract them to each other could also be what pushes them apart.
The Cast and Creative Team
The series stars Iria Del Río as Ana and Francesco Carril as Óscar. Del Río is known for roles in Spanish series like Elite and Las chicas del cable. Carril has appeared in shows such as La Esfera and Titania.
The supporting cast includes:
- Pablo Gómez-Pando as Guille
- Ana Telenti as Palo
- Lucía Martín Abello as Vero
- Vladimir Perrin as Manu
The series was co-created and co-directed by Rodrigo Sorogoyen, a filmmaker who has won major international awards. His film The Beasts won the César Award for Best Foreign Film in 2023. He created The New Years with writers Paula Fabra and Sara Cano.
The show had a prestigious world premiere at the 81st Venice Film Festival in 2024. Following its release in Spain, several Spanish journalists called it the best series of the year.

Why This Series is Important for Mubi
The acquisition of The New Years is a notable step for Mubi. This deal marks the streaming service’s first Spanish series purchase. For the Spanish producer Movistar Plus+, it is also one of their most significant multi-country licensing agreements to date.
Fabrizia Palazzo, Distribution Manager at Movistar Plus+ International, commented on the partnership:
“We are very glad that ‘The New Years’ will be the first Spanish TV series on a platform committed to independent cinema. Having the opportunity to reach viewers from so many different territories is a great opportunity for our original content.”
The series fits with Mubi’s growing catalog of exclusive series from well-known directors, which also includes projects by Lars von Trier and Wong Kar Wai. An official trailer for the series is now available on Mubi’s platforms.
