What Happened Leading Up to Episode 4?

Season 2 picks up eight years after the events of the first season. Tom Hiddleston’s Jonathan Pine is living under the alias Alex Goodwin, running a low-level surveillance unit in London. His quiet life shatters when a chance sighting of a former associate of arms dealer Richard Roper pulls him back into the field. Adopting yet another new identity as the wealthy financier Matthew Ellis, Pine travels to Colombia to infiltrate the world of a new arms dealer, Teddy Dos Santos (Diego Calva), with the reluctant help of businesswoman Roxana Bolaรฑos (Camila Morrone).

The third episode ended with a massive twist that changes everything for Pine. While secretly following Teddy, he discovered that the mysterious “Gilberto Hanson” Teddy was meeting was, in fact, Richard Roper (Hugh Laurie), the villain Pine supposedly brought down years ago. This revelation confirms that Roper is alive and directly connected to the new conspiracy, while also exposing that Teddy is Roper’s illegitimate son.

The official synopsis for Episode 4 from the BBC states: “Pine has the proof he needs to expose the British-backed overthrow of the Colombian government. But Teddy no longer trusts Matthew Ellis, and Gilberto Hanson is on his tail.”

This sets the stage for an incredibly tense hour. Pine is closer than ever to proving a deadly conspiracy but is now under direct threat from two dangerous men. His cover as Matthew Ellis is at risk with Teddy, and the man he thought was dead is actively hunting him.
