The race for the 2026 Golden Globe Awards has begun. Nominations announced on Monday, December 8, have set the stage for Hollywood’s upcoming awards season, with HBO’s The White Lotus taking a clear lead on the television side. The show’s third season, set in a luxury Thailand resort, earned six nominations, topping all other TV series. Its main competitors, the acclaimed limited series Adolescence and the sci-fi drama Severance, followed closely with five and four nominations respectively.

The film categories are led by One Battle After Another, which scored nine nominations. This sets up a major contest between major studios and streaming services, with Netflix leading all distributors with 35 total nominations. The 83rd Golden Globe Awards ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, January 11, 2026. It will air live on CBS and stream on Paramount+ in the United States starting at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT. Comedian Nikki Glaser will return to host the show for her second consecutive year.

The White Lotus Cast and Key Competitors

The strength of The White Lotus is evident in its broad recognition across acting categories. Five cast members from the show’s Thailand-set third season received individual nominations. Actors Walton Goggins and Jason Isaacs are both nominated for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role on Television. On the female side, Carrie Coon, Parker Posey, and Aimee Lou Wood are all competing for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role on Television. The series itself is also a contender for the top prize of Best Television Series – Drama.

Its closest rival is Adolescence, the Netflix limited series that swept the Emmy Awards earlier this year. It earned five Globe nominations, including Best Television Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television. Its stars Stephen Graham, Owen Cooper, Ashley Walters, and Erin Doherty all received acting nods. The other major drama contender is Apple TV+’s Severance, which returned with a strong second season. It earned four nominations, including Best Television Series – Drama, where it will face off directly against The White Lotus. Its leads Adam Scott and Britt Lower are nominated in the drama actor and actress categories.

Jason Isaacs, nominated for his role in The White Lotus, shared his excitement about the show’s success: “It’s not a coincidence that so many people from White Lotus have been nominated. [Mike White]’s a phenomenal storyteller”.

Film Nominations: A Battle of Dramas and Comedies

In film, the musical comedy One Battle After Another is the undisputed frontrunner with nine nominations. Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, the film is up for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. DiCaprio is nominated for Best Actor, and the film also scored nominations for supporting actors Benicio Del Toro and Sean Penn, supporting actress Teyana Taylor, and director and screenplay for Anderson.

The race for Best Motion Picture – Drama is highly competitive. The nominees are Frankenstein, Hamnet, It Was Just an Accident, The Secret Agent, Sentimental Value, and Sinners. Sentimental Value, a Norwegian drama, impressed with eight total nominations. The action-horror film Sinners, a major box office hit, collected seven nominations.

A notable surprise was the performance of Wicked: For Good. While the blockbuster sequel earned five nominations, including acting nods for Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, it was not nominated for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, which analysts called a major snub.

New Categories and How to Watch

The 2026 Golden Globes introduce a new category: Best Podcast. The inaugural nominees include popular shows like Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard, Call Her Daddy, Smartless, and NPR’s Up First. Another new category, Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, aims to honor popular films. Its nominees include major hits like Avatar: Fire and Ash, F1, Sinners, and Zootopia 2.

For viewers, the ceremony will be broadcast live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles. In the United States, it airs on CBS and streams on Paramount+. For global audiences, checking local listings for CBS International broadcast partners or the Paramount+ streaming service in their region is recommended. A special pre-show event, Golden Eve, will air on CBS and Paramount+ on Thursday, January 8, 2026, at 8 p.m. ET. It will honor lifetime achievement award winners Helen Mirren and Sarah Jessica Parker.
