The fourth season of Invincible is finally here, and the second episode takes viewers on a deep journey into the past. Episode 2, titled “I’ll Give You the Grand Tour,” shows what happened to the Viltrumite Empire before it became the small, desperate group of conquerors fans know today.
The episode reveals that a deadly virus killed 99.9% of the Viltrumite population. Young Nolan, played by J.K. Simmons, watched billions of his people die around him. But he survived. The show does not give a clear answer why, and Robert Kirkman, the creator of Invincible, says there may be more to this story.
The Scourge Virus Changed Everything
The episode opens with a young Nolan teaching a class of Viltrumite children about their violent history. He explains how “The Betrayer” killed Emperor Argall, leading to a purge that killed millions to remove the weak from their society. This was normal life on Viltrum. Strength was everything.
But everything changed when meteors carrying the Scourge Virus landed on the planet. The virus was designed to attack Viltrumite DNA specifically. Within moments, thousands of Viltrumites began dying. Blood poured from their mouths. Bodies piled up everywhere. The survivors, including Nolan, had to throw the dead into space, creating rings of bodies around their planet.
The virus did not just kill most Viltrumites. It also left the survivors with a serious problem. Their population became so small that inbreeding became unavoidable. The Grand Regent told the remaining Viltrumites they had to find other species to mate with to save their race. This is why Nolan came to Earth. He was not just conquering. He was trying to find compatible partners to rebuild his people.
Why Did Nolan Survive When Billions Died?
The show leaves a clear question on the table. The virus killed almost every Viltrumite it touched. So why did Nolan live?
Kirkman spoke with Variety about this exact question. When asked why Nolan survived, he gave a response that suggests there is more to learn.
“It’s possible it may come up in the future. It’s certainly unknown for now. Viruses work in different ways; some people survive and some people don’t. It’s possible that there are more elements to that character that will be revealed as time goes on.”
This is not a simple “he got lucky” answer. Kirkman is known for planning long-term stories. The Invincible comic series ran for 144 issues, and the show is already changing and expanding things. The fact that he mentions “more elements to that character” hints that Nolan’s survival may be tied to something bigger.
The show also reveals that Thaedus, the leader of the Coalition of Planets, created the Scourge Virus. He wanted to stop the Viltrumite Empire from conquering more worlds. But his plan did not work. The virus killed billions, but the survivors became even more ruthless. Now Thaedus has an even stronger version of the virus that could wipe out all remaining Viltrumites.
What This Means for Mark and the Coming War
The flashbacks do more than just explain the past. They set up what is coming. Nolan now knows Thaedus created the virus. He threatened to kill Thaedus but did not. Instead, he made Thaedus promise only to use the new virus if there is no other choice.
This puts Nolan in a difficult position. He has turned against the Viltrumite Empire, but he does not want to see his entire race die either. He tells Thaedus he will help arm the Coalition but will not join the fight directly. He wants to protect his sons, Mark and Oliver, from being dragged into this war.
But Thaedus gives him a reality check. He reminds Nolan that the Viltrumites will attack Earth and Mark no matter what. There is no staying neutral. Nolan’s decision to leave and find his son at the end of the episode shows he understands this.
A New Threat Emerges
The mid-credits scene of Episode 2 introduces Thragg, voiced by Lee Pace. He is the Grand Regent of the Viltrumite Empire. Conquest returns to Viltrum and kneels before him, ready to be killed for failing to defeat Mark. But Thragg refuses. He tells Conquest he still has work to do.
For viewers who have not read the comics, this is a major moment. Thragg is not just another Viltrumite general. He is the strongest of them all. The Viltrumite Empire has been acting under his orders the entire time. His appearance signals that the conflict with the Viltrumites is only getting bigger.
