Winona Ryder, Michael Keaton, and Catherine O’Hara Return, But Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis Do Not
Beetlejuice 2 is generating buzz ahead of its September 6, 2024 release, having already received a warm reception at the Venice Film Festival. While fans are excited to see original cast members Winona Ryder, Michael Keaton, and Catherine O’Hara reprising their iconic roles, questions have arisen about the absence of Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis, who played the deceased couple Adam and Barbara Maitland in the original 1988 film. Director Tim Burton recently shed light on why these characters will not be part of the sequel.
Tim Burton’s Vision for Beetlejuice 2
In a recent interview, Tim Burton revealed that his decision to exclude Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis from Beetlejuice 2 was driven by the film’s new narrative direction. Burton stated, “I think the thing was for me I didn’t want to just tick any boxes. So even though they were such an amazing integral part of the first one, I was focusing on something else.” He emphasized that the sequel is built around a different thematic core, centering on three generations: a mother, daughter, and granddaughter. This generational focus, Burton noted, is the nucleus of the new story, and it would not have been possible to explore this dynamic back in 1989.
Burton’s approach marks a significant shift from the first movie’s storyline, which revolved around the Maitlands’ attempts to scare away the new family, the Deetzes, from their home. The director made it clear that his intention was to move forward with a fresh narrative rather than revisiting past elements simply for continuity.
Changes in the Returning Cast
Along with Baldwin and Davis, Jeffrey Jones, who played Charles Deetz, also does not return for the sequel. However, the Deetz family remains central to the plot with Winona Ryder returning as Lydia Deetz, alongside Catherine O’Hara reprising her role as Lydia’s stepmother Delia. Michael Keaton also returns as the mischievous spirit Beetlejuice, continuing his role from the original horror-comedy.
The sequel introduces a new character dynamic focusing on Lydia’s relationship with her rebellious daughter Astrid, played by Jenna Ortega. Following a family tragedy, Lydia and Delia return to Winter River, setting the stage for a storyline centered on family and generational conflict. New characters include Lydia’s fiancé Rory, played by Justin Theroux, and Monica Bellucci as Beetlejuice’s ex-wife Delores. Willem Dafoe joins the cast as Wolf Jackson, a ghost detective, adding a new layer to the sequel’s supernatural elements.
Geena Davis’ Comments on Not Returning
Geena Davis, who played Barbara Maitland in the original film, spoke earlier this year about not returning for the sequel. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Davis mentioned, “Oh, you were expecting that I would be? Yeah, no, you know what? Because my theory is that ghosts don’t age. Not that I have. Our characters were stuck the way they looked when they died forever, so it’s been a while. It’s been a minute.” This aligns with the film’s logic that ghosts maintain the appearance they had at the time of their death, making it difficult to justify the return of the Maitlands without altering their characters significantly.
While fans of the original film may be disappointed by the absence of Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis, Tim Burton’s vision for Beetlejuice 2 seems to be centered on exploring new stories and dynamics, rather than simply replicating the past. As the release date approaches, anticipation continues to build around how these new elements will be received by audiences both old and new.
