Tom Hardy has finally addressed the rumors that had everyone talking. Another report suggested Hardy was unhappy with the show’s ensemble format, which featured several high-profile actors including Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan. Some outlets even claimed there was tension between Hardy and the show’s co-creators, Ronan Bennett and Jez Butterworth.
The situation seemed serious enough that TheWrap reported Hardy would not appear if there was a third season. Production for Season 2 had wrapped in March 2026, and the show had not yet been officially renewed for a third season at that point.
Tom Hardy Speaks Out: There Was No Firing
At the September 10 premiere in London’s Leicester Square, Hardy did not hold back. Speaking to AP News Entertainment, he said plainly:
“There was no firing, there was no walking away and there was no arguments in that aspect. I just kept my head down and waited, carried on talking to the grown-ups, which is what we just do. So I don’t really have anything to say about that.”
The actor, who is also an executive producer on the show, had previously been reported to be on the verge of quitting due to a rift with Butterworth. According to Deadline, executive producer David C. Glasser and director Guy Ritchie helped them sort out their creative differences.
Hardy also spoke warmly about working with his legendary co-stars. He called it a “privilege” to work alongside Brosnan and Mirren and said he looks up to them. “Coming up, these are actors that came before me,” he told the Press Association. “So to be able to work with them is a privilege, but also to be able to enjoy them, watching them spread their wings with their range now as well, and play against their type in some aspects, and really enjoy that is a beautiful thing to watch as a human being”.
Pierce Brosnan Calls Rumors a Storm in a Teacup
Pierce Brosnan, who plays crime boss Conrad Harrigan, was just as direct. The 73-year-old actor told the Press Association that the whole thing was blown out of proportion.
“Oh my God, it was a storm in a teacup, really. I love the dude. I love Tom Hardy. I’m a massive fan of the man’s work. Truly.”
Brosnan also insisted that the cast and crew are “rock solid” as a group. “Everyone shows up for work, and everybody’s just there on the spot,” he said. “It moves very fast so it’s not like we go out and socialise and go to the pub or anything like that. Everyone goes home to their families and before you know it, you’ve done 10 episodes”.
Helen Mirren Stood by Tom Hardy All Along
Helen Mirren, who plays family matriarch Maeve Harrigan, had been defending Hardy long before the premiere. Back in May 2026, she posted a close-up photo of Hardy’s face on Instagram with the caption, “Love you now and always, Helen”. She later told Variety that she would work with him again “in a f***ing heartbeat”.
At the premiere, Mirren told AP that the cast are professionals who love and support each other. “We love the show and we want the show to be its very best,” she said. When asked what she was most excited for audiences to see in Season 2, Mirren said simply: “Madder, badder, better. Chaotic, cool, funny. Frightening, funny”.
The reunion on the red carpet was visibly warm. Hardy was seen embracing Mirren, and the two shared a moment that put months of speculation to rest.
