The Marvel Cinematic Universe might be saying goodbye to its friendly neighborhood Spider-Man sooner than fans think. Tom Holland, who has played Peter Parker for a full decade, just told Empire Magazine that he is ready to pass the web shooters to the next hero. The 29-year-old actor wants to leave the franchise the same way Robert Downey Jr. did as Iron Man—by mentoring the next generation before walking away.
Holland’s comments come just two months before the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, his fourth solo movie as the web-slinger. The film hits theaters on July 31, 2026. In a wide-ranging interview published on May 28, 2026, Holland opened up about his future with Marvel and who might replace him.
“For whoever’s next, whether that is a Miles Morales or a Spider-Gwen or a Spider-Woman or something like that, I would love to be a part of setting up the next chapter,” Holland told Empire. “Whatever that looks like, I don’t know. But if I could do what Downey did for me, then I would be so content swinging off into the sunset.”
Holland’s ‘Spider-Puberty’ Idea Became the Movie’s Core
Spider-Man: Brand New Day marks a major shift for Tom Holland behind the camera. For the first time in his MCU career, the actor was invited into the writers’ room. Holland and the creative team met “once every two weeks to pitch ideas and discuss our ambitions” for Peter Parker’s next chapter.
One of Holland’s ideas ended up becoming the main hook of the entire movie. He pitched something he called “Spider-Puberty.” The concept was simple but strange: What if Peter Parker’s powers start changing and evolving in ways he cannot control? What if the hero starts losing his grip on the very abilities that make him special?
The studio did not like the name at all. “‘Spider-Puberty’ was my tagline pitch to the studio, which was immediately shot down,” Holland admitted. But the idea itself stuck. “They liked the kernel of the idea, and it grew into what we have in the movie now.”
A Lonely Peter Parker Returns After No Way Home
Spider-Man: Brand New Day picks up after the devastating ending of Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021). Doctor Strange’s spell made the entire world forget that Peter Parker ever existed. His best friend Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon) does not know him. His girlfriend MJ (Zendaya) walks past him like a stranger.
The new movie jumps forward four years. Peter now lives alone in a small, sad apartment. He spends his nights listening to police scanners and swinging out to stop crimes. He has buried himself in the job of being Spider-Man because he has nothing else left.
Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, told Empire that this is the most comic-accurate version of Spider-Man the MCU has ever shown. “He’s doing the Spidey thing of living in a rather sad, small apartment, listening to the police scanner and going out and using his great power responsibly,” Feige said.
Director Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi) sees the movie as a story about grief. Peter has lost Aunt May, Tony Stark, and now the memories of everyone he loved. “He is dedicating his entire existence to his job,” Cretton said. “That’s the core theme that I find incredibly relatable.”
Producer Amy Pascal added that this film is smaller and more personal than past Spider-Man movies. “[Brand New Day] is a more internal movie, and the bigness of it is emotional, not worlds exploding,” she said.
Who Could Replace Tom Holland as Spider-Man?
Tom Holland mentioned three possible successors by name: Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, and Spider-Woman. All three characters exist in Marvel comics and have large fan followings.
Miles Morales is the most obvious choice. He is a teenage boy from Brooklyn who gets spider powers and takes on the Spider-Man name after Peter Parker’s death. The animated Spider-Verse movies have made Miles incredibly popular. Amy Pascal has already confirmed that Sony wants to bring Miles into live-action after the animated trilogy ends.
Spider-Gwen (Gwen Stacy) is another fan favorite. She comes from an alternate universe where she gets bitten by the radioactive spider instead of Peter. The character has a strong following thanks to the Spider-Verse films.
Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew) is a different character entirely. She has powers similar to Spider-Man but a very different background. She worked as a spy and a private investigator in the comics.
Holland wants to do for the next Spider-hero what Robert Downey Jr. did for him. Downey’s Tony Stark appeared in Spider-Man: Homecoming as a mentor figure. He guided the young Peter Parker, gave him advice, and helped him become a better hero. Holland now wants to play that same role for a new actor.
The Punisher and a New Cast Join Brand New Day
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has a much larger cast than previous Holland solo films. Jon Bernthal returns as Frank Castle, also known as The Punisher. This is a surprising pairing because the Punisher is known for being violent, R-rated, and brutal. Spider-Man is a PG-13 hero who does not kill people.
Holland addressed the concern directly. “I know that there are concerns about taking a sort of R-rated character and putting him into one of these movies,” he told Empire. “But the way that we’ve designed the world around him feels very authentic to the Frank Castle we know. There are fun ways to get around the fact that he swears all the time and kills people.”
Bernthal said that Frank Castle has not changed at all for this movie. “Frank Castle is perfectly at peace in a world of absolute darkness,” Bernthal explained. “He’s not looking for a buddy, he’s not looking for a friend. He’s fine living in there. In fact, all he wants to do is dig deeper.”
The film also stars Sadie Sink (Stranger Things) in an unknown role. Mark Ruffalo appears as Bruce Banner (the Hulk). Zendaya and Jacob Batalon return as MJ and Ned, even though their characters do not remember Peter.

Will Holland Be in Avengers Doomsday and Secret Wars?
As of May 2026, Marvel has not officially announced whether Tom Holland will appear in Avengers: Doomsday (coming December 2026) or Avengers: Secret Wars (coming May 2027). Holland’s comments suggest he is willing to stay for at least a little longer. He wants to help set up the next hero before leaving.
Online reports suggest that a stunt double may shoot some of Holland’s scenes for Doomsday, with Holland providing voiceover work when Spider-Man is masked. But Marvel has not confirmed any of this.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day releases in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia on July 31, 2026. In India, the film releases in English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam on the same date.
