The second and final season of Netflix’s Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft reached its conclusion. The eight-episode season, which premiered on December 11, 2025, ends the series with a major battle and a surprising twist that sets up a future Lara Croft never saw coming.
The season focused on Lara’s race against a powerful antagonist named Mila, the founder of a tech company called Pithos. Mila sought to collect ancient African Orisha masks, which hold divine powers. While she initially presented herself as an ally interested in ethical archaeology, her true goal was far more dangerous. The finale, Episode 8: “Bringer of Death,” reveals Mila’s plan and forces Lara and her friends into one final fight for the fate of the world.
Mila’s True Plan for the Orisha Mask
The central mystery of the season was why Mila was so determined to collect all the Orisha masks. The final episodes provide the shocking answer. The masks grant their users control over elements like water, earth, and healing. However, the most critical mask belonged to the trickster deity Eshu.
Eshu’s unique power is the ability to take and, more importantly, spread the abilities of other Orishas on a massive scale. Mila’s goal was to combine Eshu’s mask with the power of another mask belonging to an Orisha named Babalu. Babalu’s mask gave its user control over death and disease.
Mila intended to use Eshu’s power as a multiplier. She wanted to spread a deadly disease across the entire planet instantly. Her twisted plan was to remake the world by eradicating what she saw as a flawed humanity. As one source described it, “If she gets the mask, it’s the end for humanity”.
“Eshu can take and can also spread other Orisha power. And Mila wants the mask… to spread disease, and even death, everywhere in the world in just seconds.”
This revelation forced Lara, her best friend Sam Nishimura, and Eshu himself to join forces with other remaining Orishas to stop Mila before she could complete her plan.
The Final Battle and Mila’s Defeat
To stop Mila, Lara and her team lure her and her private army to a lost city in Africa that was once Eshu’s sacred kingdom. Mila arrives wearing multiple Orisha masks, making her an incredibly powerful opponent with control over several elemental forces.
The battle brings together Lara’s team and the last of the Orishas. This includes Yemeja, the water spirit, and Taiwo, who possesses healing powers. The fight tests everyone’s strength. At one point, Eshu, haunted by past failures, briefly leaves the battle out of fear, calling himself a “coward”. However, he returns to help, realizing he must face his fears to protect his friends and his legacy.
The tide turns when Taiwo’s healing powers directly counter the disease Mila tries to spread. Eshu then uses his regained abilities to teleport around Mila, strategically removing the masks from her one by one. Stripped of her stolen powers, the combined curse of the masks rebounds on Mila, leading to her defeat.
The Fate of Fig and a New Mystery
During the larger battle, Lara faces off against Fig, Mila’s skilled and ruthless right-hand woman. Their fight ends with Lara defeating Fig and leaving her trapped, seemingly to die.
However, the season’s final moments reveal a major twist: Fig survived. In a post-credits scene, Fig is shown contacting a mysterious woman in a desert location. This woman appears to have a deep, personal grudge against Lara Croft.
The scene shows the woman in a hidden facility with a large vault door. She has photographs of Lara from what appears to be their school days, but in each picture, Lara’s eyes have been scratched out. She also has a board with news headlines about Lara, suggesting a long-held obsession.
“She claims that she’s the one who knows how to handle Lara Croft.”
Fig meets with this new antagonist, who says she always knew Mila would fail. Their alliance suggests that even with Mila gone, Lara’s troubles are far from over, setting up a potential new enemy from Lara’s past.
Lara Croft’s Personal Journey and Decision
With the immediate threat over, the finale also shows Lara making a significant personal decision. She reflects on the legacy of her late father, Lord Richard Croft, a famed archaeologist and collector.
Lara comes to a realization about her father’s work. While she loves and respects him, she understands that many of the artifacts he collected were taken from their rightful cultural and historical contexts. In a powerful act that defines her own path, Lara decides to return the relics her father collected to the communities and cultures they belong to.
She states that while her father loved the relics, they were never truly his to keep. This move marks Lara’s evolution from a treasure hunter into a protector of cultural heritage, aiming to correct past wrongs without erasing her father’s memory.
Eshu’s Resolution and the Fate of the Masks
Eshu’s story also reaches a conclusion. After the battle, he returns to his rightful place as the guardian of the lost city. In a final, spiritual scene, he is shown traveling to meet a supreme deity in the Yoruba cosmology, often understood as Olodumare.
There, Eshu returns the masks of his fallen Orisha siblings. This act provides closure for him, allowing the divine power within the masks to be safeguarded. The deity implies that a time for rebuilding has come, suggesting that worthy individuals may one day be found to use the masks for good.
This ending gives Eshu a complete arc, from a trickster burdened by guilt over his past failures to a responsible leader who has reclaimed his kingdom and made peace with his destiny.
