Uma Thurman built a career playing tough characters, but her first brush with the law came long before any of that. The actress told Jimmy Fallon that a childhood plan to buy a pair of red high heels with 75 cents ended with her sitting on a police officer’s lap in the back of a squad car. The story aired on the October 21, 2026 episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

Thurman, now 56, shared the memory while talking about her early independence. The moment stuck with her because she genuinely believed she was being arrested.

A Move to Amherst and a Shoe in the Window

The Thurman family had just moved to Amherst, Massachusetts, where her father, Robert Thurman, was teaching. During the drive into town, a young Thurman spotted a pair of red high-heeled shoes in a store window. She was about three or four years old.

“My first brush with the law was we moved to a new town. We drove past a shoe store, and I saw these red high-heeled shoes in the window. I was about three or four.” — Uma Thurman

Thurman believes the shoes caught her eye because they looked like Dorothy’s ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz, which had the power to take Dorothy back home. The family settled into faculty housing, and the shoes stayed on her mind.

75 Cents and a Solo Trip to the Store

The next day, while her mother took a nap, Thurman took about 75 cents from a table and headed out alone. She found the shoe store and walked inside. She told the shopkeeper her mother was on the way and tried on the heels.

“I agreed that they fit. It was all very nice and then I handed him 75 cents and the man was like, ‘Hmm.’” — Uma Thurman

The shopkeeper grew suspicious when no mother appeared. Questions followed, and then the police arrived.

Placed on an Officer’s Lap in the Squad Car

Officers asked Thurman where she lived. She could not remember the name of her street. She insisted she could walk back on her own, but the officers refused to let her go alone.

“I said, ‘But I’ll just go right back. It’s just over here!’ And they were like, ‘No, no, no. You’re coming with us.’” — Uma Thurman

A police officer held her on his lap in the back of the squad car while they drove around trying to find her house. Thurman said the officer was probably friendly, but to her, the situation was terrifying.

“I remember it so well because I’ve never been so scared in my entire life because I really thought I was getting arrested. And I sort of was.” — Uma Thurman

Mother’s Street Rescue Ends the Scare

The drive ended when the officers spotted a woman screaming in the street. Thurman’s mother, Nena von Schlebrügge, came running out in a muumuu with hip-length hair. Thurman compared her to Miss Clavel from the Madeline books.

“And then kind of like a long-haired beautiful hippie, Miss Clavel, was my mother in a muumuu with her hip-length hair screaming in the street and they were like, ‘That’s her.’” — Uma Thurman

The officers recognized her as the child’s parent, and the two were reunited.
