Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, a new animated series coming this April, is set to answer a major unanswered question from the Ahsoka series. The show features the return of the mysterious dark side warrior Marrok, whose fate in Ahsoka left fans with a big mystery. The series will explore Marrok’s past and reveal how he first died, solving a puzzle from the live-action show.

The series begins with a two-episode premiere on Disney+ on April 6, 2026. New episodes will be released weekly, with the finale arriving on May the 4th. The story follows Maul, voiced again by Sam Witwer, one year after the Clone Wars as he tries to build a new criminal empire on the remote planet Janix.

The Mystery of Marrok from Ahsoka

In Ahsoka Season 1, the masked Inquisitor Marrok served as an enforcer for Morgan Elsbeth. His story ended in a strange way. When Ahsoka Tano defeated him in a lightsaber duel, his armor burst open and released a cloud of green mist instead of revealing a body. This green mist is linked to the magick of the Nightsisters of Dathomir, strongly suggesting that Marrok was already dead and his body was being controlled like a puppet.

This left a big question: Who was Marrok originally, and how did he die the first time? His only other appearance was a brief, silent cameo in the animated series Tales of the Empire, where he was seen kneeling before Darth Vader. Beyond that, his history was a blank page.

How Shadow Lord Connects to the Ahsoka Mystery

The trailer for Maul – Shadow Lord shows that Marrok is hunting Maul on the orders of Emperor Palpatine. A key moment in the preview features Marrok telling Maul, “The Emperor wants you dead” before they engage in a lightsaber duel. Since this series takes place years before the events of Ahsoka, it will show Marrok when he was still a living Imperial Inquisitor.

This setup gives the show a clear opportunity to show Marrok’s original death. Many fans and analysts believe Maul might be the one to kill him during their duel. If this happens, it would definitively confirm the theory that the Marrok in Ahsoka was a reanimated corpse. Furthermore, Maul has his own deep history with the Nightsisters of Dathomir, who could be the ones to later recover Marrok’s body and use their magick to bring him back.

“Marrok’s inclusion isn’t what is important… It was confirmed in the trailer that Marrok and Maul will cross blades at some point in the series,” notes an analysis from The Direct. “It is entirely possible that, when they fight, Maul will strike down Marrok and kill him.”

New Characters and a Gritty World

While solving an old mystery, Shadow Lord will also introduce a new chapter in Maul’s life. The series is set on the planet Janix, a city-world built inside a crater that exists outside Imperial control. Executive producer Matt Michnovetz describes it as “one part Gotham, one part Metropolis and a hundred percent Star Wars”.

Maul won’t be alone in this new underworld. He will be pursued by Captain Brander Lawson, a local police detective voiced by Wagner Moura, and his droid partner Two-Boots, voiced by Richard Ayoade. More importantly, Maul will cross paths with Devon Izara, a young Jedi Padawan who survived Order 66, voiced by Gideon Adlon. Maul sees her as a potential new apprentice to help him gain power and get revenge.

The show will also feature the return of other characters from the wider Star Wars story. This includes the Sixth Brother, another Inquisitor who first appeared and was killed by Ahsoka Tano in Tales of the Jedi. Vanessa Marshall will also reprise her role as Rook Kast, one of Maul’s Mandalorian loyalists.

A New Look for Star Wars Animation

Maul – Shadow Lord will have a distinct visual style. Lucasfilm Animation is moving beyond its traditional look for this series. The team used practical filmmaking techniques, like painting brushstrokes on glass and shooting them, to create a textured, painterly feel for the gritty world of Janix.

“Cinematography Lighting & VFX Director Joel Aron really took it up a notch with going back to the practical ways of capturing brush strokes,” said Executive Producer Athena Portillo. “He even went back to establishing matte paintings on canvas.”

The show’s producers promise a fast-paced, serialized story. “We wanted to create an action-packed thrill ride, something that had the rush of a roller coaster,” said Matt Michnovetz. Supervising director Brad Rau added that working with Sam Witwer has revealed new sides to Maul, even including a scene where the fierce warrior is shown quietly conducting a tea ceremony.

The first two episodes of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord arrive on Disney+ on April 6, 2026. The series will explore a dark time in the galaxy while finally providing answers about a mysterious warrior from a beloved live-action show.
